All those years that Rayek and Ekuar lived with the GoBacks, Ekuar had to have had the job of staying behind to watch the children, right? There's a good chance (especially with how he is with kids) that some of the GoBacks were raised by him more than their parents. So when Ekuar gets kidnapped, there's bound to be at least a few of the GoBacks who genuinely cared and wanted to get him back. And then Rayek goes and does his thing, and imagine how betrayed they must have felt.
