HC: Someone from U.N.C.L.E eaither gets fake information or pulls a prank on Solo, and they tell him that Illya died on his mission. And Solo believes them. When Illya really comes back from his mission like an hour later he finds Solo in his appartment/at his desk in the office, basically sobbing.

… why would you … why would you do this to me? (jk I love it!!)

Okay, let’s pretend he’s still in the office, because he didn’t have the strength to pull himself together. There is this photography sitting on his desk, the one that Gaby took when they were out in Budapest. Illya looks relaxed and even directs a lazy smile at him, while Napoleon himself points at an entry in the dictionary he’s holding in the other hand.

The photography itself made him smile before, warmth making his toes tingle. Now, it only reminds him of his loss and he doesn’t know what to do. He knew that the missions they were on could be dangerous and he always expected for them to die while being away. But never like this. Never separated from each other.

Napoleon was suppossed to be with Illya! Everything feels wrong and out of place. So when the door opens, his first instinct isn’t to mask his grief, but to face the person stepping in directly. 

He doesn’t believe his eyes at first. And Illya freezes in shock. “Has something happened to Gaby?!”

Normally, his first instinct would be to assure his partner everthing’s fine, but given the circumstances he lashes out. He doesn’t say a lot of words and they aren’t vicious, but they hurt enough to make Illya’s face darken. 

The next thing Napoleon knows is, that he’s turning away from him. He panics, tries to keep Illya in the room, but he feels him slipping away. It’s been a long day, a day of grieving and he doesn’t has the strength to stop Illya. 

“I thought I lost you,” he says. 

“I thought I’d never see you again.”

“I thought we’d never get a chance to be happy.” 

Then, he’s sobbing again because he can’t help it. And suddenly, Illya is there, hugging him tightly. Napoleon clings to him and hides his face in his neck. He feels that Illya’s trembling and it takes him a while to get that his partner is crying as well. 

He wants to ask what’s bothering him, but he also wants to maintain the silence, which is why he doesn’t say anything in the end. They stay like that for a long time: hugging, calming down slowly  and reassuring themselves that their partner is still alive by caressing his back. For the moment, Napoleon doesn’t need anything else.

(idk what's happening sorry I've tried to send this twice!) (2/2) Illya drops his fork. Gaby just stares. "Is that what this is?" she demands. She's not disgusted, just shocked. Solo's always seemed too suave for something so crass. "Yes, well, I'm afraid it does happen. Frankly, I'd be more surprised if madam Vinciguerra hadn't had anything." Stunned silence from the other two. "Lighten up," Solo goes on blithely, taking another sip of his tea. "At least it's not hepatitis this time."

I bet the first thing they do is to curse Sanders, because both of them know it’s his fault - Napoleon is very well prepared normally. Then, they accompany their partner to his next doctor’s visit, to make sure everything is alright. 

The next time he is send on a honeypot mission, they both tell him they want him to be safe. They think him being careless only happened because he was scared of what Sanders would do to him if the mission failed and because he had no one who cared about him in the past. 

Secretly, all three of them are glad, things have changed.
