It wasn’t exactly a secret that his first-choice destination when deciding where to go on holiday was to Spain. The opportunity to free his yacht from its confines, sail lazily down the Channel, across the Bay of Biscay, through the Strait of Gibraltar, to dock at one of the many, many sunny Spanish shores was one that couldn’t easily be beaten.

It was an added bonus that the piers were dotted with chip shops and restaurants marketed to sell all sorts of his own cuisine. Ooh, brilliant! The unspoken contradiction of purposefully going somewhere else to get away, only to fall back on the safe and the familiar, seemed fairly lost on him. England was spending a week in a quaint little village, chock-full of British tourists just like himself, surrounded by nice, warm weather—this was it!

He had engorged himself on a big plate of fish and chips and had a nice chat with some elderly couple from Cornwall when he decided to hit the beach. To him, that meant he sat on a towel in the sand, parasol above him so he didn’t burn too badly, and read one of his favourite books. And, if he was feeling especially daring, he might go for a paddle—and that was a delightful little term for walking along the beach and letting one’s feet get wet, not actually going into the water. No way.

He was having a nice time, until someone decided to block his sun and he lost his place on the page. “You wouldn’t mind shifting, would you?” England asked testily, only to look up and freeze and let out a huff. “Oh, good, the man himself—hello, Antonio.”

“A baby penguin? Then....why don’t we chase that dream, to make you happier? I believe in you! We should go to the zoo right now and hug one! Maybe even take it home with us, it can live in the bathtub. Or, we can just go to the zoo and look at the penguins, then have a drink afterwards.”

🍰 What’s my muse’s guilty pleasure?

The one that immediately comes to mind is that, sometimes, England enjoys the odd romance novel—unironically! He likes McDonald’s too, but don’t let America hear that and he’ll flat-out deny having ever said it. Sometimes he overindulges in biscuits and clears out a whole gosh-darn packet with a cup of tea.
