February 11
On February 11, 1812, Massachusetts governor Elbridge Gerry was first accused of drawing the boundaries of his state’s congressional districts to favor his political party. The practice, now known as gerrymandering (Gerry + salamander, the creature the ridiculously shaped districts resembled), has since corrupted our politics by allowing politicians to choose their voters rather than voters choosing their politicians. Not for nothing will Elbridge forever be associated with a lizard-like slug.
March 26, 1812 A political cartoon in the Boston Gazette coins the term "gerrymander" to describe oddly shaped electoral districts designed to help incumbents win reelection. It was named after Ebridge Gerry.
Elbridge Gerry was a merchant from Massachusetts who joined the fight for independence by providing supplies to the Continental army and attending the Second Continental Congress, eventually signing his name to the Declaration of Independence.
