We receive many questions from customers who are curious why we include a picture of the orange elcometer paint gauge reading in our inspections. You may recall our previous post describing that an elcometer paint gauge is used to detect any variances in paint thickness on the vehicleâs exterior body panels. Letâs go into additional detail about elcometer paint gauges and how we utilize this tool in the field for your inspections.

 Identifying Previous Repairs
Unfortunately for us, not every vehicle repair is documented with an accident report and insurance claim, so our inspectors are trained to spot previous and substandard repairs. Substandard repairs, those easily visible to the naked eye, are generally easier to spot due to items such as misaligned panels, overspray, and poor color match. Our inspectors not only catch and document the obvious items, but also take a detectiveâs approach in seeking hidden previous repairs.

Our inspectors are equipped with elcometer paint gauges to assist them in the inspection process. Elcometers examine the thickness of paint on metallic surfaces. We test the paint thickness of at least three points (left, center, right) on each exterior body panel to confirm paint conformity. When readings vary on a panel, the inspector moves the elcometer in a circular pattern to determine the size of the anomaly. They may also receive an error reading of âUERâ from the elcometer when a non-metallic substance such as bondo or body filler was used to fill in a dent. By identifying prior body work, we are able to inform our customers of any potential issues that may cause concern before making the purchase.
