have you noticed how, when zaria says she can make the potion better, he doesn't feel challenged or demeaned as a teacher? he doesnt assert that he knows better simply because he's an adult. he lets zaria come up and demonstrate for herself. he even does the same for zane (tho with much less desirable results).
it really really ties in with how child cedric was constantly ostracized (not just by his fellow students but ADULTS) for his "bumbling" nature and how the one positive influence in his childhood was a teacher who was willing and patient. when he sees children with the similar passion for magic he has, of course he's eager to hear them out and he learns just as much from them as they learn from him.
