This fic is my personal Director’s Cut of 9-1-1 Season 9, starting after Episode 10. Everything I don’t rewrite remains as aired; everything I do rewrite reflects my own interpretation of where the story could have gone instead.

walk with me but, AU where Buck joined the track team instead of the football team, where he learned quickly that his long legs gave him an advantage and with training he got even better, maybe even getting scholarship offers. and still, dropping out not because he didn't like running anymore but due to *gestures* everything else. imagine him making it a habit of going for runs during his nomad years.

now, imagine that buck after the ladder truck, going to physio, re-learning how to use and run with this new version of his leg again. going for his mornings runs and now having to rest more than usual, and measure himself sometimes too.

It’s been ages since he had someone his own age to talk to, a peer, a friend – he hasn’t connected with anyone at the academy, hasn’t talked to any of his friends from the army since he was discharged, and of the only two high school friends who didn’t disappear when Shan got pregnant… well, one of them was Shannon herself, who hasn’t spoken to him since she left, and the other he left behind when he left El Paso. Eddie feels younger than he has maybe since Chris was born. It’s like having a friend, a real one, has given him permission to remember that he’s twenty-five and allowed to have fun, to smile at things that aren’t his kid. And all without having to step away from Chris to do it. He never would – could – have expected that.
