We made it, guys! Chapter 1: Seeking Asylum has come to a close! 

I’m not quite done with this chapter, myself. I’d like to revisit it and retell it, better, sometime in the future. But not right now. I want to do it maybe after chapter 3-- for the moment, there’s nothing I want more than being able to move on with this tale. 

Now that I’m done with chapter 1, Eldritchfell will be going on a hiatus as I finish sketching chapter 2. At the moment I’m about halfway through, so it’ll likely take me a few more weeks-- 2-3 if things go according to plan. 

In the meantime, I now have a Patreon which will allow people to see pages way early, and a Discord!

I hope to see you guys there. And if I don’t, then I’ll see you in a couple weeks with Eldritchfell Chapter 2: Choices! In which there is lore, murder, pie, and pyrokinesis.

Panel 1

Toriel laid a hand upon Chara’s shoulder.

Panel 2-3

She slowly turned Chara around to face the house that stood before them, at the very end of the Asylum. Warm yellow lights peeked through the curtains from within.

Toriel: Well, this is my home here in Asylum. If you like, you may seek refuge here for as long as you desire.

Panel 1

Toriel focused, attempting to detect the state of Chara’s Soul. Numbers and stats seemed to register in her mind.

Check:

Name: “Chara”

HP: 16/20

LV: 0

On a mission.

Toriel let out a sigh of relief. Chara HAD been in a fight with another monster, however the damage was easily recovered. She could not see physical injuries, either, so Chara had likely not encountered the Eldritch. 

Panel 2

In her palm, Toriel conjured up some healing magic, the magic taking the form of a rosey-hued fireball.

Panel 3

The fire flew to Chara, dissipating around them as Chara’s HP was fully restored. HP was lowered when bullets with negative emotions hit a Soul-- bullets with positive emotions could bolster and recover it.

Panel 4

Toriel: It was a very reckless thing, you did. There are dangerous things here, and I cannot protect you if I don’t know where you are. Regardless, I am pleased to see you are mostly unharmed.

Oh yeah. This sequence.

Panel 1

Chara gazes into yet another room. Similar to the previous rooms, the walls are purple bricks.

Dissimilar to the previous rooms, there are webs coating the walls of this room. 

Panel 2

Perched upon the webs of this room are spiders, as expected, and donuts, which are decidedly less expected.

Panel 3

Upon noticing these things, Chara looks suddenly less happy about this bake sale. 

Panel 4

Chara: You know what, I’m actually not that hungry!

Frisk: *Chara, wait!

Panel 1

It had taken Toriel longer than expected.

It was not every day that a human fell into the ruins. It was quite the surprising event for Toriel… and likely quite the traumatic event for the human. Toriel wanted to ensure Chara’s transition into life Underground went as smoothly as possible from this point forward. But Toriel had become distracted by her preparations, and forgotten about where Chara was in the present.

Waiting in a room in the Asylum. A room Toriel felt was safe to wait in for a short time, but once she realized a full half hour had passed, she desperately groped around for her phone in the interior pockets of her cloak, then jabbed at the buttons with her fingers.

Much could have happen. She needed to make sure. She could not lose another, not in her own territory.

Ring. Ring.

Perhaps she had forgotten to charge Chara’s phone? Or perhaps… 

Panel 2

She would need to head back through the Asylum, to ensure that yes, this one was still alive, still alright.

Toriel: It took longer than I anticipated… perhaps I should--

Panel 3

Voices echoing down the hall. Footsteps entering. Relief and alarm flooded Toriel’s Soul.

Toriel: Ah!

Panel 4

Toriel hastily shut off her phone, and slipped it into the interior pocket of her cloak, rushing towards the human who had just entered.

Panel 5

Glad as she was to see the child, Chara, alive and here, she was still worried, still afraid. Monsters roved the Asylum, that might panic at the sight of a potentially dangerous human, or who might want the protection the power of a human Soul might grant them.

And something less easily reasoned with than a monster.

Toriel: Chara! I asked you not to leave the room! Are you injured?

Bye bye, Napstablook.

Panel 1

It was then that Toriel turned her attention to Napstablook. She smiled before addressing the ghost.

Toriel: Did you guide them here? Your name is Napstablook, correct? I appreciate you looking over them. Would you like to come inside?

Panel 2-4

napstablook: oh…

Under Toriel scrutiny, the ghost faded until they were totally invisible, occasionally muttering ‘oh no’, as Chara and Toriel watched in silence.

Chara gripped their knife tightly, shuffling around to face the insidious flower, ready to sever the stem and it--?

Panel 3

It wasn’t there? No golden flower, no thorny vines, just bare purple bricks. Chara thought they saw slight movement in the periphery of their vision, but whatever that was had vanished by the time they looked as well.

They brandished their knife at nothing.

Their heartbeat picked up. They had? They had seen it, they could have sworn, it was right there, they recognized it…

Panel 4

Chara: I… I could’ve sworn…

Panel 5

napstablook: ooo… did something happen…

The ghost’s voice snapped Chara from their musings and worries. They quickly lowered their knife, though their gaze kept lingering on that spot where they thought they had seen the flower.

Chara: I’m fine. I’m coming.

I’m very close to finishing drawing the final page of Eldritchfell chapter 1. Therefore, surprise Friday update. 

I am so hecking happy with this page and how it turned out.

Panel 1-2

As Chara continued following Napstablook, they thought they spied something out of the corner of their eye. A flash of yellow, amidst the violet bricks and shadows and occasional green vines.

Panel 3

And when they turned to look, there it was, standing out against the background and highly obvious. A small golden flower. Nestled amongst a cluster of green vines with red thorns.

Panel 4-5

A memory flashed through their head. They’d seen this flower before, when they had first fallen, just before a monstrous abomination had struck in their moment of curiosity and distraction.

Now their eyes widened, contracted pupils darting from side to side. Here was the lure. Where was the Flower Beast?

Panel 1

Frisk: *Huh? What is it?

As Frisk and the ghost spoke, Chara edged around the ghost, making their way to retrieve their knife.

Panel 2

They knelt down towards where it had become stuck in the floor, and gripped the handle, trying to pull it out.

Behind them, the ghost’s tears began to drift up and take shape, forming into a top hat of some kind.

ghost: do you like it? i call it… ‘dapper blook’

Frisk: *I love it! It’s so cool!

Panel 3

The knife was more difficult to pull out of the floor than it was to get in, apparently. Chara grit their teeth, yanking at it.

ghost: is your friend… alright…

Frisk: *...I think so?

Panel 4

At last the knife came free. Chara’s momentum carried them to their feet, as they tried to keep their grip on it this time.

Frisk: *Don’t stab yourself, Chara!
