Elevator, Charbonneau, North Dakota by Arielle Seibold-Galston Via Flickr: This ghost town is in a pretty remote location on the North Dakota prairie. But oil has still found it. The population looked as if it had gone up by one--a lone camper was set up by a tree in the middle of this empty place. There was also various oil related things on the hilltops above town. This town has an interesting history, which you can read below. In 1960 Charbonneau was removed from the census. Charbonneau was founded in 1913 and a peak population of 125 was reported in 1920. Charbonneau’s name was derived from nearby Charbonneau Creek, which was in turn named for the interpreter on the Lewis & Clark expedition, Toussaint Charbonneau.The post office closed in the 1960′s and is no longer there. The school is still standing on the hill. There is a small cemetery on a windy hilltop, and two elevators as well as two houses.
