Hey American followers!

I know you don’t tend to reblog any politics of countries other than your own... but the Canadian Federal Election is going to be this year in October!

In Canada we don’t replace 1/3 of the government every couple of years, we replace every single seat. EVERYONE has to run for a seat all at the same time, through the whole nation. Party that gets the most votes? Their leader usually becomes the Prime Minister.

We need your help (And you can help by reblogging this too!)

Not enough information on Canadian politics and issues is circulated on tumblr. Despite there being a lot of Canadians, somehow most of us can go a whole year without seeing a post about Canada, even when we make a point about following Canadians.

The US election will be ramping up in the early primaries when Canada’s entire election happens (We don’t campaign very long and we have a LOT of rules about campaigning too).

Trudeau has failed us. Entirely. He is doing nothing about climate change, he’s chummy with Trump, he violates land treaties, he pushes pipelines through unceeded territory, he’s having our native peoples arrested for protesting this, he has not investigated the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, he’s been a HUGE fan of The Glass Cliff while calling himself a feminist, he has repeatedly broken promises including electoral reform (our system is actually not great! Maybe not as rigged as yours, but it badly favours the Liberal and Conservative parties!), and been over-all pretty bad for us. It’s especially infuriating that we see all of this and also you guys reblogging photo-op pieces of him going on about how great he is for going to pride and being cute (That’s actually not an indicator here when only one party leader hasn’t gone in like, 20 years).

We need the NDP or the Greens this year. We need them to have a loud voice at the very least. We need your help to do this. We need you to blog this time, for once, about an election that isn’t american. Our politics affect you too. We affect you as much as you affect us, we are neighbours and unless y’all invade us again some time soon, it’s not likely to change. Help us get someone better into office. Please, reblog posts about the Canadian Election when they start appearing in September/October.

What is a ballot and what does it look like?

The ballot is a list of names of all the candidates in your riding. The ballot will have a white circle beside each candidate's name. The candidates' political parties will be on the ballot next to their names.

To make sure your vote counts - be careful not to spoil your ballot:

Do not sign your name on the ballot.

You can only make 1 "X" on your ballot.

Do not write anything else on your ballot.

If you make a mistake while marking your ballot, you can get a new one. Take your ballot back to the Deputy Returning Officer (DRO). Say you have made a mistake. The DRO will give you a new ballot.

Are you eligible to vote?

To vote in the federal election, you must:

be a Canadian citizen

be at least 18 years old on election day, October 21

prove your identity and address

Accepted ID for voting

Where to vote:

If you vote on election day or advance polling days, you will vote at an assigned polling station in your riding.

After the election is called, you can find out where your assigned polling station is located:

call Elections Canada at 1-800-463-6868 or 1-800-361-8935 (TTY)

Advance Voting

1. At any Elections Canada office across Canada

We will have over 500 offices open seven days a week from the time the election is called until the election. Vote at any one of them before the Tuesday before election day, 6:00 p.m. You will vote using the special ballot process.

2. At advance polls

Your assigned polling station will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday the week before election day.

3. On campus

Vote at select campuses across the country (open for five days) about two weeks before election day. You don't need to be a student to vote on campus.

4. By mail

To vote by mail during the election, apply online or at any Elections Canada offices across Canada before the Tuesday before election day, 6:00 p.m.

New York City and Jersey City both left major decisions about the cities’ futures to voters. New Yorkers overwhelmingly backed a system of ranked-choice voting, which allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference, rather than selecting only their top choice. The goal, supporters said, was to reduce runoff elections and minimize the risk of split votes: If no single candidate won a majority, the last-place finisher would be eliminated, and his or her votes would be redistributed to supporters’ second choices. The system will be used only in primary and special elections and will apply to elections for mayor, comptroller, public advocate, borough president and the City Council. It will debut in 2021. Though a group of elected officials mounted a last-minute opposition campaign, arguing that ranked-choice voting would leave minority candidates and voters at a disadvantage, the proposal passed with 73 percent support. Other ballot initiatives will expand the powers of a police oversight board, allowing it to investigate and potentially prosecute police officers suspected of lying to the board, and ban city officials from lobbying their former agencies for two years after they leave public service. In Jersey City, residents approved stricter regulations on short-term rentals, in the most expensive local referendum in the state’s history. The new measures will be a blow to Airbnb, which plowed more than $4 million into ads, mailers and canvassers, easily outspending the hotel industry and an influential hotel workers union, which were in favor of the restrictions. Jersey City had become increasingly valuable to the company as New York City escalated its own crackdown on illegal Airbnbs. The new restrictions aim to weed out large-scale investors who have rented out hundreds of brownstones and condos through Airbnb, raising quality-of-life complaints and concerns about the impact on housing affordability.
