Democrats Should Remember Al Gore Won Florida in 2000 — but Lost the Presidency With a Pre-emptive Surrender

The Democrats can get all the votes counted in Florida, Georgia, and Arizona only with a display of people power.

A year later, in November 2001, the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago announced the results of an examination of all 170,000 undervotes and overvotes.

NORC found that with a full statewide hand recount, Gore would have won Florida under every possible vote standard. Depending on which standard was used, his margin of victory would have varied from 60 to 171 votes.

The frightening reality is that unless millions of ordinary people get prepared to take action, our country is set to plunge head first into Version 2.0 of Florida 2000, when Al Gore and the Democratic Party leadership handed George W. Bush the presidency by placing its faith in the Supreme Court — and by refusing to support mass mobilizations demanding that every vote be counted.

In her memoir of these events, labor organizer Jane McAlevey recalls how a higher-up in Florida explained why the Democrats refused to back protest efforts: “The Gore campaign has made the decision that this is not the image they want. They don’t want to protest. They don’t want to rock the boat. They don’t want to seem like they don’t have faith in the legal system.”

The success of the Republican’s coup was not inevitable. As McAlevey notes, “people were willing to leave their daily grind and step into history to defend their democracy, on a scale that could be called massive without exaggeration.” Yet the Democratic Party, in conjunction with its union official allies, “smothered the movement moment in Florida, snuffed it right out.“

Consider what might have occurred had Gore bitterly accused Bush of winning fraudulently and blamed the five Republican appointees on the Supreme Court for siding with Bush for partisan reasons. Or if, during his campaign, Bush had promised to put Gore in jail for various alleged improprieties, and then, after he won, accused Gore of spying on him during the campaign and trying to use the FBI and CIA to bring his downfall.

Damn the 2000 elections. I was only 11 at the time, but distinctly remember our teacher calling us together that Bush being elected was a Very Bad Thing™. And that’s for us  living across the pond in The Netherlands

I think sometimes us americans really don’t think enough about how influential our shitty politics are on the rest of the goddamn world, and especially now we need to have a conversation about it. Wild to me now that people are romanticising the bush years, when, like, as you said we knew it was a Very Bad Thing™ in 2000.
