TODAY'S FACT IS

Did you know that the Little Fire Ant (Wassmania auropunctata) is also called the Electric ant? Native to Central and South America, these ants have spread to much of the tropical world and have become invasive. While small, these ants pack a punch with their stings, causing painful welts in humans but they will target the eyes of smaller vertebrates (cats, dogs, tortoises, etc) and blind them. They outcompete native arthropods for resources of all kinds.

Def gonna design more ant boysengals! There are SO many ants out there its crazy. The concept is that theyre all in a dysfuncational colony together. Since theyre all different types, they have very different ideas of how to run a colony and thus hate each other.

My new short story "The Electric Ant in its Natural Habitat" is out now—near-future social sci-fi about a shaggy group of people hanging out in a fairly scrubby yard, who wind up inventing a battery while messing around at farm auctions and debating which hot sauce is good.

It's in the second issue of Tractor Beam, a new magazine out of Texas that's focused on soilpunk—optimistic science fiction about agriculture, basically. Imagine if Amazing Stories had riffed on the Ag Advisory panel at the FCC instead of on Popular Mechanics. That's this magazine. It's exactly what I've been looking for.
