While the former works with only a single heat regulator, the latter has more. Different heat regulation is essential since you need to iron certain fabrics at specific temperatures. Fabrics such as linen, silk, cotton and wool all need to be ironed at varying temperatures to avoid them burning and to get the best results. The ones we use at home have several advantages over the coal powered ones, not the least of which is their light weight. However,to ensure that it works optimally and stays with you for years to come, it is important to know how it works so that you can maintain the appliance effectively.

Here is a closer look at the essential parts of an electric iron and how they work.
• Sole Plate: The triangular shaped, thick slab of iron that forms the base of this product is called the sole plate. Most sole plates are heavily chromium plated, whichhelps prevent the product from rusting. It also holds the cover plate and iron pressure plate together in position with two or three studs on the base plate.
• Pressure Plate: The pressure plate is tightly pressed against the sole plate via a few studs and is slightly heavier than the pressure plate. It may be a thin sheet of steel that is about ¼ cm thick or may also be made of heavier cast iron. The pressure plate generally has a circular or rectangular hole so that the thermostat can be easily placed.
• Thermostat: Probably the most important part of the appliance, the thermostat uses a bimetallic strip that operates the switch, which is connected with the resistance or heating element. The bimetallic strip consists of two different metals bonded together and converts a temperature change into mechanical displacement. The strip is attached to a contact spring that expands and curves when the temperature rises. A special device, called cam, is placed close to the contact spring that ensures that the temperature remains constant and within certain limits.
• Pilot Lamp: The pilot lamp rests over the cover plate with one end always connected to the supply and the other connected to the heating element. A shunt resistance assists in providing a voltage drop across the pilot lamp.
The capacitor is connected along the body at different points to ensure that the temperature of the electric iron stays within limits at all times.
