I'm playing the saint-saens sonata 1st movement for my as-level recital (sorry, I'm british, I have no idea what year that is in America aha but it's like 16/17 age wise) and just wondered if you had any key tips or advice and stuff? I just feel like I can't get it to sound right, if that makes any sense... Thanks :)
Listen to lots of recordings of it. I know that Ricardo Morales has a great recording of the piece. Harold Wright has a recording. I haven't really listened to it yet, but overall, he's a very well respected clarinetist (although keep in mind that he tends to have a lot of slow tempos in his recordings). I would also recommend listening to some French clarinetists play it.
Be sure to really exaggerate the phrasing. The movement can get kind of boring without expression and clarinet players tend to not exaggerate enough for the phrasing to get across to the listener.
