Are electrical engineering programs for you? Answer some questions to find out
In the medical and arts fields, career options are relatively clear. However, the same does not hold true for engineering. Students have to put in a lot of thought while choosing a branch of engineering. I remember when I was checking out the different courses provided by different engineering colleges, I would go to sleep every night confused about what I really wanted to do. Thankfully, I had a wonderful career guide, who sat me down, soothed my frayed nerves and asked me a few questions which helped me to decide what I wanted to do.
The questions were -
• Do you open switch boards at home and try to repair them when problems crop up? • Are you always interested to learn how electrical appliances function? • Are you eager to know what goes on inside the CPU of your computer? • Are you interested in transistors and sensors? • Do robots fascinate you and would you love to make your own robot one day? • Do you want to play a significant role in developing and designing products which have massive impact on the lives of people?
When I answered all the questions in affirmative, my guide told me that electrical engineering programs are what I should be looking for. It was much later that he told me that he had seen me working in the physics lab in high school and always thought I would make a good electrical engineer. So, I started looking for colleges which offer electrical engineering courses and now am on the verge of getting my electrical engineering degree.
If you are thinking of taking up electrical engineering, ask yourself these questions. Answer them and take your decision based on the answers.
Know which engineering branch to opt for
While choosing an engineering branch, I would suggest that you -
• Choose the branch that interests you – Always try to opt for an engineering branch that truly interests and inspires you. Do not opt for a branch which seems to offer a lot of scope career-wise. You need to understand that every engineering branch has scope if you do well. • College or branch? - Many aspiring engineers suffer from this dilemma. It is always nice to study in an engineering college which is well reputed and ranks high but you must ensure that the particular department you are interested in is good as well. • Options for post graduation - If you want to pursue research in the future, you should check out the options for post graduation offered by the branches you are considering.
Summary – A lot of students choose electrical engineering programs because the career prospects seem bright. However, one should not opt for engineering programs based solely on the scope they provide. When students are thinking of taking up electrical engineering, they can ask themselves a few questions; the questions have been outlined here. This blog also mentions a few factors which student should consider while choosing an engineering branch.
