High performance nickel based alloys for Nuclear and seawater plants
Nickel based alloys are known for their outstanding corrosion resistance and supreme mechanical properties. They are widely used for numerous applications in various industries such as chemical and petrochemical processing, pollution control, oil and gas extraction, power and pulp and paper plants. Nickel alloys offer good reliability and versatility, for which they have become the prime choice of material for the construction of process vessels, pipes, and various other applications designed for use in aqueous and high temperature conditions.
Various factors have an impact on the function of a specific material in a specific condition that includes concentration, temperature, aeration, liquid or gaseous flow rates, impurities, abrasives and cycling process conditions.
The family of nickel base alloys include diverse range of materials that are popularly used in the general and heavy duty industrial applications such as:
Nickel 200: It is a commercially pure nickel offering good mechanical properties and resistance to aqueous corrosion. Nickel 200 has common applications in caustic soda, synthetic fiber production and food handling.
Nickel 201: Low carbon version Nickel 201 prevents intergranular corrosion at temperatures above 600oF. It is used in chemical and process plants.
Monel 400: It is a Nickel-Copper alloy offering god mechanical strength and supreme resistance to various types of media such as seawater, dilute hydrofluoric and sulfuric acid and alkalies. Alloy 400 has applications in marine and offshore engineering, salt production, feedwater heaters and chemical and hydrocarbon processing.
Monel K500: It is equivalent to Monel 400 however is more durable and harder than Monel 400. It is used in oil well tools, marine propeller shafts, fasteners etc.
Inconel 600: Alloy 600 resists stress corrosion cracking and caustic corrosion, and with high temperature strength and oxidation resistance. Inconel 600 is used for chemical and petrochemical processing, nuclear and automobile engineering and heat processing.
Inconel 625: This alloy resists corrosion in vigorous media, specifically to crevice corrosion, pitting and high temperature oxidation. Inconel 625 has major applications in aerospace, chemical plants, oil and gas plants, pollution control, marine and nuclear engineering.
Inconel 718: Alloy 718 is an age hardenable alloy having high strength up to 1300oF or 700oC with corrosion resistance and weldability.
Hastelloy C276: Alloy C276 prevents corrosion in reducing and mild oxidizing conditions. It resists localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Hastelloy C276 has major applications in chemical and process plants and in severe environments in the pollution control plants. Alloy C276 is widely used in rod and bar forms and flat products.
Incoloy 800: It has high strength and corrosion resistance. Alloy 800 is widely used in chemical, petrochemical and food processing, nuclear engineering and for the sheathing of electrical heating elements. It can be used up to 1200oF and is commonly used in rod, bar, tubes and wire forms.
