Been posting a bit recently about shock collars and electro kink, and they're a popular part of stories, so thought I'd do a safety post cuz there's often a lot of misconceptions.

This isn't a complete guide and if you're going to take part in this kink I would recommend doing more research. But hopefully this is a good primer for people that are writing or just curious.

First, I'll preface this with a big: Only use these on consenting humanoids (non-human and non-person identities inclusive of course). It is never okay to use these for animal training. This guide is just for kink!

Safe Areas: See image. Generally, anything on the lower body is safe, as are are arms. NEVER create a path across the heart or vital organs. Avoid the face, eyes are very delicate. Avoid piercings as this can leave burns. Be mindful of if you're in contact with anything conductive, this may change the behaviour of the device.

Devices: Always be sure to check that electrical toys are in safe working order and unless you really know what you're doing, it's not a good idea to try and repair or kit bash them yourself. It's just not worth getting electrocuted the wrong way. If you do know what you're doing or want to learn, check out https://openshock.org/

For shock collars, despite what you'll commonly see in stories, it's not a good idea to use them on the neck. A lot of important nerves go through there and you really don't want to damage those. Better places for shock collars are wrists, thighs and ankles.

For TENS units and other tools that conduct current through the body take special care not to cross that path through anything important. So for instance, don't put one pad on each arm because that will conduct through the upper body.

For sparky tools like violet wands be aware that they can leave electrical burns. You can actually use these for branding, which can be a lot of fun (ask me how I know 😜), but make sure you're doing that on purpose. Generally you won't have issues if you're using glass contacts but be careful with prolonged exposure with pointed metal ones.

I realised the mug I was holding was leaking water directly onto my borderline fire hazard extension cord and I imagined my electrician dad watching down on me with abject terror as I smile, drip more water on it and say as cavalier as possible "the first rule of electrical safety is to have fun and be yourself"
