History of Wires and Cables
Wires and cables have become an indispensable part of our everyday lives. But did you ever wonder when was wire invented? You will be surprised to know that first evidence of wire that has been found dates back 5,000 years ago.To know more such interesting history facts about wires and cables, keep reading this blogpost which has been curated by our team at RR Kabel, one of the leading top cable manufacturers:
• Electric induction was discovered in 1831: Michael Faraday, one of the greatest experimental physicists of all time, worked on and off for 10 years to prove that a magnet could transmit electricity. In 1831 he succeeded by experimenting with a magnet and a current-carrying wire.
• Insulated wires came into being in the 1880s: Today, it is common to see wires insulated in PVC sheathing. Do you know that the first cables were insulated with a natural latex material produced? However, the material would dry out and fail to insulate the wires. It was later replaced by rubber and other materials. In the 1930s, PVC insulations were being tried and by the 1950’s PVC replaced rubber cables.
• The earliest use of electrical cable was in 1844: When the first commercialized Telegraph lines were used to send a message from Washington DC to Maryland.
• The first telegraph company was launched in 1861: Though the first message through Telegraph was sent in 1844, it was not until 1861 that the first national telegraph company was launched. It laid the first transcontinental telegraph line.
• Long-distance power lines launched in 1889: The first electric power transmission line in the US was started in 1889. This was the first long-distance transmission of electricity., it stretched 14 miles from Oregon City to Portland.
• K&T wiring was introduced in the early 1880s: Knob-and-tube (K&T) wiring was one of the first electrical wiring systems. It was commonly used in buildings in North America till 1940s. But eventually, it was displaced because of the high cost of installation.
• The metal conduit was invented in the 1940s: Metal conduits allowed many individual conducting wires to be pulled in the same rigid metal tube enclosure.
