from /r/vexillology Top comment: Elektrostal (Электросталь) is a city of 155,196 people, located in eastern Moscow Oblast. The flag was adopted on April 2nd, 1998. It's a banner of the coat of arms, adopted on December 5th, 1996. The coat of arms was designed by Konstantin Fyodorovich Mochenov, a name you should be familiar with if you spend any considerable amount of time reading about Russian city flags. The artist of the emblazonment was Robert Malanichev, who as it turns out is quite a prolific heraldic artist. The flag is entry 793 in the State Heraldic Register. The flag depicts the Greek god Hephaestus (and his main symbols, the hammer and anvil), who is among other things a patron of metallurgists. He is therefore a symbol of the ever-important industry of electrometallurgy. The lightning sparks represent electricity, canting the first part of the name. The nucleus represents modern energy production in the city. The red was chosen due to its association with foundries.
