The Carlsberg Elephant Gate
two zap is more than one freshly served bottle of elephant beer
Danish Historicist architect Vilhelm Dahlerup (August 4, 1836 – 1907) was the most prominent of his day, and put his mark on Copenhagen with a number of iconic buildings, most of which are preserved to this day. That includes The Royal Theater building, the Pantomime Theater in Tivoli, and the original museum building for Statens Museum for Kunst.
Today we focus on what many consider the most aesthetically impressive factory buildings in Denmark, the old Carlsberg Brewery, which has this Elephant Gate (1892) as its main entry point, with a dipylonic construction at the other end of the court. Carlsberg’s motto - “Laboremus pro Patria” is embossed above the twin pachyderms.
