Please tag as elephantgirl, thanks!
I have chronic depression (dystemia), and I always feel like a fake because I can stay productive even during depression that is very hard. My parents always say I'm making it too big of a deal but it's like I have bad thoughts playing on loop in my head 24/7. Idk why I'm writing this exactly but I just wish it wasn't chronic. There's something that makes me want to give up, knowing it's never gonna go away completely.
Hey there,
Whether or not someone has depression does not mean they can or cannot stay productive throughout depressive episodes.
Some people can deal with their depression quite well and so even when their depression is quite bad they are still able to function quite well. Other people though may not be able to do this but this does not mean or show that they are suffering more than those that can still function quite well and be productive in this time. So please do not think that you are a fake, your feelings and emotions are real and true, people just handle and deal with things quite differently!
I’m sorry that your parents are forever saying that you are making such a big deal about all of this, this just means that they don’t fully get and/ or understand what you are going through and this is OK – parents unfortunately don’t always truly understand what their child/ children experience and especially if they have not experienced it themselves.
Thoughts playing on a loop continuously in your head is never easy, there was a time that this was happening for me as well and it still does from time to time. But as you learn to cope better with these thoughts and what you are going through as a whole, things will get easier for you. Yes, these thoughts still might pop up from time to time but they will be less intense and you will be more able to still go about your normal day-to-day routine and things like that.
‘Chronic’ can be such an evil word in that it can mean so many different things but when most people see it they just view it as meaning something is really bad and will be for a long time or for forever. Chronic does not mean you will not have your good days though, try and view life as a roller coaster having many ups and downs. This is true for anyone’s life, you will have your good days and bad days and there is unfortunately no way to avoid that, life is not perfect but you will have days where you feel happy and on top of the world so try to remember that when you are feeling really down and badly, it will not last forever just like a thunder storm never will!
I really hope that this has helped a bit and please do let us know if we can help to support you in any other way!
I’m thinking of you and hope that you’re going OK!
Take care,
Lauren
