Are you trying to “free” your way into a six-figure business? I know you are probably wondering what does that mean? It means are you only trying to use free resources to start, sustain, and advance your business? If you are then I have some bad news for you. Your business will not thrive if you do not INVEST in it. I do believe in starting where you are at. I don’t believe in staying there. As your business grows you will need to invest in marketing, invest in employees that are experts at what they do, invest in systems and programs to help streamline your business. Some people think they will just use social media to become a six-figure earner. They don’t have a website or business license, but they have a free Facebook page or an Instagram page and say they are a business owner. This isn’t how business works. You need to invest in an LLC or Corp. You need to have a website. You need to have money to pay for advertising and marketing even on social media. Facebook pages now have to boost and pay for their post to be seen. Gone are the days of free engagement. Don’t be fooled, money is needed to be in business. I challenge you to sit down and plan out a money strategy for your business and commit to it. That may be investing in a good graphic designer for your brand identity or investing in a course or business coach to learn a new skill. Your business will thank you in the long run. I Have Enough (My Year Without Shopping Pt. 5)

When preparing for a business trip, my usual MO is to purchase something new before traveling. It gives me a boost of confidence to have a new blouse or scarf when I encounter new people and circumstances. Recently, however, due to my commitment not to purchase new retail items for myself this year, I refrained from making this sort of purchase.
You know what? I didn’t miss it. My trip went just as well as it would have had I purchased that blouse or scarf. I didn’t need to buy something more. Because I refrained from doing so, I didn’t add something more to my already bulging closet. I didn’t spend money on a new item that I really didn’t need. What’s even better, I found out I didn’t need that new item to feel confidant. Call me crazy, but I actually feel empowered to know I don’t need to make that sort of purchase anymore.
Here’s the best part. I was able to invest the money I saved in Elevat. I ordered more jewelry from Belize, reordered purses from Kenya, and put money aside for bags due to arrive soon from India. Money that would have ended up in the pockets of corporate big wigs instead helped women in developing countries pay for the basic necessities of their families. I don’t mind telling you I feel really great about that!

Will You Join Me This Lenten Season (My Year Without Shopping Pt. 4)

I’m six weeks into this resolution not to shop retail for a year. Believe it or not, I’m enjoying many aspects of it! I can immediately delete all the junk email that formerly took up a chunk of my morning as I made sure I wasn’t missing “the big sale”. All those catalogs that show up in my mail box? Instead of having them pile up until I find time to go through them, I can chuck them into recycling without feeling guilty. A friend’s birthday is coming up shortly. Before my resolution, I would have headed to the mall to find some meaningless mass produced trinket. This past week, I went to an antique store and found a cute decorative cup from India I think she’s going to love. It was only $8!
As we enter this Lenten season, I’m wondering if there might be some of you who would join me in giving up retail shopping for 40 days? For this brief period, could you declare that you have had enough of supporting mass production and over- consumption? Instead, during these 40 days, support artists making handmade items by frequenting craft and college art sales. You’ll find much more unique and interesting items than you would at a chain store. Better yet, support those artisans in developing countries who are trying to feed their families from the proceeds of selling their product s. Will you join me in trying to make a difference in this world? We can’t control all injustice in this world, but we can control our own choices.
