Dutch studio MVRDV to transform disused highway in Korea into public garden
In a similar project to Thomas Heatherwick’s Garden Bridge project in London, this elevated garden walkway in Seoul, Korea looks similarly ambitious... not to mention impressive. Titled the ‘Seoul Skygarden’, the design will populate the bridge with no less than 254 different species of trees, flowers and shrubs.
Built in the 1970s and due to be demolished due to safety concerns, the structure - which covers a combined surface area of 9661 square meters - became the focus of a design competition launched earlier this year intent on renovating the bridge. When completed, the bridge will cut the walk across town from 25 minutes to just eleven, and even promises to generate 1.83 times the cost of its renovation.
MVRDV’s proposal won out over others due to its intensely social focus. In addition to the myriad trees and plants set along the path, the studio also intend to feature cafe’s, flower shops, markets and greenhouses to further generate income for the city.
I’m really enjoying these kind of projects that have been surfacing as of late. Like the Garden Bridge in London, I’ll be watching this one closely.
