Higurashi is seriously one of my favourite series ever. Like, out of all media forms, not just anime. I love it so much... the characters, the story... The first time you finally see the story come together was mind blowing.
Higurashi was the first “darker” anime I got into back in 2008 and I’ve been in love with it ever since (I even translated the first chapter of the “Eye Opening Arc” light novel for my final project for my bachelors in Japanese and translation studies).
It’s amazing and will always be a series I keep close to my heart. While the animation isn’t the best (and the “Kira” OVA was….eh…ehhh) it’s still a wonderful story that carries a lot of themes. It’s kinda upsetting how it tends to get boiled down to a “moe yandere horror” series. It’s so far from that…
All your talking and drawing of Layers of Fear made me interested but I'm super easily scared (only played Amnesia with a guide when the monsters where supposed to pop up, etc and still played the Prison scene with sound off, screaming all the while) do you know any good let's play video's I could watch?
The only one I’m familiar with is Cry’s stream of the game, which is what I went to when I was curious about it (start around 13 minutes in). He’s also played through the DLC on his main channel.
Although, Layers of Fear really is one of those type games that you get the most out of by playing it yourself, mostly because of items and sequences some LPers miss. Not to mention the different endings (the main game and DLC have 3 endings each, and it’s important especially in the DLC to play through each time doing different things because there are two distinct paths with their own audio flashbacks to listen to).
But yeah, I’d recommend Cry’s LP. Just put the video on fullscreen and enjoy - despite his commentary, I found myself very much immersed anyway.
Looking back, I wish I hadn’t been so skeptical of Layers to begin with, because watching Cry’s LPs meant I couldn’t go into the main game or Inheritance blind, and that’s a nice thing to have with a new horror game…but I plan to do that for Bloober Team’s next game, Observer.
