Elfyn Evans finished Saturday’s penultimate leg of Rallye Monte-Carlo with a narrow 4.9sec advantage over team-mate Sébastien Ogier in the French Alps. Thierry Neuville (who won three of the day’s four special stages) is a mere 1.5sec further back.

The Toyota Yaris debutants swapped the lead on three occasions leaving the opening round of the 2020 FIA World Rally Championship poised on a knife-edge ahead of tomorrow’s closing leg in the mountains above and around Monaco.

Elfyn Evans now leads the 2020 FIA World Rally Championship after rewriting the sporting history books with an outstanding victory on this year’s  weather hit Rally Sweden. The Welshman not only becomes the first-ever British driver to win the Scandinavian classic but also is the first Briton to top the WRC points table since the heady days of Colin McRae and Richard Burns nearly 20 years ago. On only his second outing for the Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team, Evans overcame the odds to lead the tricky winter fixture (which suffered from a lack of snow and ran a reduced number of stages) from start to finish, winning five of the nine stages to beat Hyundai’s defending champion Ott Tänak by 12.7 seconds. The Dolgellau driver’s second career WRC victory – his first famously came on home soil in Wales in 2017 – elevates him to jointly lead the championship, tied on 42 points with last month’s Monte Carlo winner Thierry Neuville, but ahead of the Belgian on countback.

WRC Great Britain's Elfyn Evans leads Rally Sweden after the opening leg

STORY: Britain's Elfyn Evans has the overall lead after the first day of Rally Sweden on Friday (February 14) with a cumulative time of 30 minutes 43.7 seconds.

The reigning WRC champion Ott Tanak of Estonia is second overall, 8.5 seconds behind Evans, Kalle Rovanpera of Finland third, 14.3 seconds behind the leader.

Tanak won the second and fourth forest road speed tests that took place on Friday in Sweden and Norway - Evans the first and third.

The rally continues on Saturday (February 15).

There was a lucky escape for Junior WRC debutant Jon Armstrong of Great Britain, with both former WRC eSports champion Armstrong and co-driver Noel Sullivan walking away from the high-speed accident unharmed.
