"Things had been strange with Madison since the night two years ago when we’d met Fashi in the cave. Eleanor strictly forbade us to speak to each other, and often sent me away from home on long errands. We were never left alone together. Madison continued to sneak out a couple of times a week to see Fashi. She brought back little notes from her and snuck them into my pants pockets as she passed me the following day. They said things like 'Cards still dry' and 'See you again someday?' They were simple, but they kept me going."
