Chapter Three: Big Boy Style
Hope yall enjoy this one lovey doveys!!
See me sneering in my car
I’m driving to my star
I’m listening to the music with no fear
You can hear it too if you’re sincere
Okay, so Elijah was freaking out. Like freak the freak out kind of freak out. Both in a good way and bad way. One, he had a job interview. Two, this was his first job interview, so he had no idea what to do!
For Pete’s sake, he didn’t even have any appropriate clothes for an interview! The only thing he has are khakis, sweatpants, and then DC shirts. Elijah wanted to tear his closet apart just from frustration alone. But it wasn’t even his.
Elijah ran downstairs, ignoring Ssaem’s scandalized look at his speed to find his keys.
“Going to the store! Needed new clothes like yesterday dude! Do you want me to get you anything?”
“A new housemate.”
“Alrightie!”
Elijah looked down at his sonic watch, it was ten in the morning. He had the interview at three. Holy smokes he needed to hustle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was now 1:30. No, he didn’t spend that long at the stores, he just got distracted by ice cream. In his defense the vibrate colors had him in a chokehold.
Anyways, he eventually made it back to home where he began running around the house, looking for ways to look professional. He took a shower and then shaved, he even shaved his legs! He bought pants, but like, you never know when you’re gonna get pantsed. Plus, it made him feel nice.
Then he attempted to brush his hair back, but his curls did nothing but spring back up. Thank god they were short (not as long as the man’s) so his hair didn’t look as messy as it would’ve looked. Right now, he was stuck on trying to tie his tie. The youtube tutorials went too fast and they weren’t even explained well. He was trying to learn visually too, but then it’s like the youtuber would do multiple things in one second, and it was hard to track their fingers.
He was frustrated. He wanted to make a good impression. Especially if it was the company that the man worked for-wait no-he was supposed to get over this. The main goal is a job, not a crush. Speaking of, he’s gotta call his brother to tell him the news!
“Ssaem! You’ve seen my phone!?”
He could hear his grumbling from a mile away.
“Stupid young man, phone in your pocket. Do better.”
Elijah fumbled around for his phone in pants, Ssaem was absolutely right. Elijah took his flip-phone (that was littered with stickers) out and dialed his brother’s number down. He answered on the second ring.
“Wassup, buddy?”
“Tommy, Tommy, Tommy, guess what? I got a job, or at least I think. I hope!”
The line was quiet for a moment, Elijah took the phone out of his to check for the connection. Then he heard Tommy’s voice again.
“Good job, buddy, I knew you could do it.”
“Thanks, cool bro. I, uh, got the interview in an hour.”
“You best get going then. And remember: don’t lie. Not because you’re not allowed to, but because you’re terrible at it and say stupid shit. Shake the interviewer’s hand, make direct eye contact. I know it’s hard, but Elijah, try your best not to fidget, okay?”
Tommy rigorously nodded alone to Tommy’s words.
“ Got you, Tommy! I’m gonna do my very best, okay?”
“Okay, Elijah”
The phone was silent again for a moment, which was to be expected. Elijah recognizes this as the social cue to hang up the phone. But he had one more thing to say.
“Hey, uh, Tommy.”
“Wassup?”
“Are you, uh, are you like…Are you proud of me, Tommy?”
“......more than you’ll ever know, Elijah.”
And then he hung up, but Elijah wasn’t offended. He was smiling so hard, he’s sure that his face might actually bruise.
Oh shit, it’s 2:10 now, he might actually be late considering he’s taking his scooter. He had gas money earlier today, but he hawked down the ice cream truck earlier, so he had like no gas anymore.
For the umpteenth time, Elijah raced down the stairs. He ran to the door and paused, turning back to say his goodbyes to Sensei.
“Alrightie, bye Ssaem! I got a job interview today.”
“You lying?”
“No, no, no! I’m completely serious! It’s for that cleaning service you told me about, Trip’s Window Services!”
“Thank god. Tired of seeing lazy bastard all day.”
Elijah smiled at that and ran off. He hopped on his scooter (he almost fell off) and proceeded to ride the fastest he’s ever rode that scooter. He could feel his whole left leg burning. But he couldn’t stop, far too close to the finish line.
He finally saw the building in his sight and Elijah could feel happiness bursting in his chest. He didn’t see any safe place to put his scooter, so he took it with him. He told the receptionist what he was here for and was instructed to sit down. Then he began waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
And-alright he was getting a bit tired of this.
He started playing games by himself. So far three red cars and six yellow cars. Last time it was a draw, this time it’s a blowout. Very surprising, because most of the time he sees red cars-
“Elijah Benjamin?"
Elijah perked up at his name being called, he quickly rose to his feet, dragging his scooter with him. He took his hand out for a handshake, it was accepted.
“Hi, uh, that’s me. Elijah Benjamin. In the flesh, present-with a bow wrapped ‘round on top.”
The man stared at him, but he then beckoned him to follow him. Okay, not a man of many words, that’s fine! He could do that. Elijah puffed up his chest as he followed the man. Big Boy Style, you feel me?
Finally, the man took them somewhere to sit. It was a pretty small table in a pretty small room, but Elijah didn’t really care. He was just focused on scoring this job.
“Alright, Mr. Benjamin-”
“Uh, Elijah’s fine. That’s my first name so I would like to be called that.”
“Of course, Elijah. My name’s Levi Henderson and I’ll be the one carrying out your interview today. We’ll start off by checking for your availability first.”
“Um, like all day, every day. I just help my old man make plushies, and then I play Five Nights at Freedy’s. But only during the day, it’s too scary at night.”
Levi fixed him with a confused stare, but he let it go.
“Um, alright, well that’s good. Anyways, any experience?”
“I was in Boy Scouts for like, six or seven years. I could show you all my merit badges and insignias. I have a lot, like a lot!”
“Right, right. So, like, what did you do during your time as a Boy Scout?”
“Well, I was a boy scout but like they didn’t let me do anything with them. So I lied, I was actually more of a Girl Scout, they were really nice. I baked and sold cookies, uh, we would clean old ladies houses-”
“Clean?”
“Yeah, like mop and stuff. And I would cut the grass, take out the trash-”
“What else did you clean, Elijah?”
“Their basements. We were all too scared to do it, but I just decided to do it since I was the only boy.”
“Right, right.”
“Oh! And-and then I would clean their cars, roof, and windows-”
“Right! Windows! Did you like cleaning windows?”
“I mean, yeah, it was cool spraying the cleaning water on the windows. And then the squeegee would make this noise like “skrrrr, skrrrrr, squeaaaak”, really nice.”
“Good, good, because that’s what you’re going to be doing.”
“Cleaning windows?”
“Yes, real easy right? Your availability is good, you finished high school, you got some kind of experience. We’re in desperate need of cleaners and you fit the job perfectly.”
“Really!?”
“Really, here I’ll tell you what, how’s it sound to start training?”
“Right now, today?”
“This very second.”
“Yeah dude! I mean, Mr. Henderson.”
“Relax, I’m only seventeen. Just Levi’s fine. Plus, it’s my first name.”
And Levi gave him a smile with that, as if he was delivering a punch line.
But he was, because he had referenced what Elijah said earlier. And then he used it on himself. Levi had just told a joke, a very funny joke.
Elijah doubled over laughing, clutching his tummy.
“That was the funniest thing ever man! Gosh, you are a funny dude, my guy!”
“I try my best.”
And that made Elijah laugh even harder.
He later sobered up while Levi was teaching him the basics.
“So like, did I get the job?”
“.............What do you think?”
“......Yeah, okay, that’s fair.”
Author’s Note: Another chapter down, how was it, how we felt? I tried my hardest not to reference Matt too many times, and wanted to tease y'all some more.
This was more of a comedic chapter than anything, but it did set the stage! Plus, take the comedy as an apology for how sad chapter one was. Song today was Punkrocker by the Teddybears.
Got another character added to the roster, Levi Henderson! Btw, do we like the characters I added to the story?? Trying to add more to the storyline than what the videos offer, want it to make sense y'know?
Matt will probably be featured in the next chapter, don’t get too excited though, it’ll be a small role for now. I want y'all to get to know more of Elijah and his life. His struggles, ambitious dreams, the nice people in his life (besides his parents.) Also, Tommy cameo! Y'all like Tommy? Because I do! I relate to him a lot since I’m also the eldest in my family. Tommy wants to be known as an asshole, but he’s like one of the softest people, that is if you don’t fuck with Elijah. I damn near cried writing that phone call scene.
Writing Levi had me cracking up. Juggling high school and being a manager for a cleaning company? Yeah no, my boy is TIRED! Ain’t nobody been coming in wanting to be a window cleaner (plus Matt scares them away), so imagine his utter happiness when dumbass Elijah comes waltzing in his life.
Lil warning too, this won’t be a love triangle. I fucking hate love triangles, so like obviously I wouldn’t write them. Elijah and Levi are strictly platonic, Matt is the only man for him! Though, a good friend of mine said using Levi as a jealousy plot device would be juicy. And I agree *smirk* *smirk*.
Constructive criticism is always welcome, just be kind! Again, thank yall for reading, I appreciate the support soooooooo much! The comments on instagram were so freaking kind and supportive, I was like, “Oh, now I REALLY gotta write this!”
Alright yall, bye yall, love yall!
