     “the first in a long time, actually.” Nice people were a rarity for him. Everyone seemed to feel a sudden dislike for him as soon as they see him, although he was caring about his goddamned business and ignoring his surroundings. He had never really found an explanation for that phenomenon. He was not surprised by it, not even a little bit. His life had turned into a downward spiral of inexplicable, impossible events; one more mystery would not make any difference. 

      “Yeah.” A laconic reply. “That’s really rare for me.”

❝ come here. ❞ it’s said softly, warmly as the scene presenting itself before him. she invites him with a hand patting down the couch where she lies. her smile is painted with the rainy shadows outside, both ever so soothing.

     IT ISN’T affection that always leads him back to her, nor any other kind of love that he can’t feel at all in this life. Something else keeps making him crawl inside her house from the living room window and greet her with a (sometimes bloody, sometimes not) crooked smirk - perhaps the same thing that pushes him in front of her when a danger bigger than both of them drops saliva from its open fangs and waits in anticipation for the right moment to swallow them both in one go. It’s really hard to tell what that something is, though. At the beginning he tried to solve this puzzle in a hundred different ways, asking himself questions and growing annoyed and frustrated when the answer remained out of sight, but now he’s given up on it. He doesn’t need it. He needs no reason nor justification. It’s no use trying to look for what he can’t find anyway, and it’s not like he will enjoy their time together less if he can’t solve this mystery.

     Years ago, they spent a long time playing a private game, pushing each other back and forth, waiting to see who’d bleed first. Now, Irial leans against the door frame of Elle’s living room, arms crossed on his chest, a corner of his mouth lifted in half a smile. It’s been hours since he arrived at Elle’s place soaking wet, and yet it’s still pouring. Rain drums on the windowpane to the rhythm of an unheard lullaby. Shadows cover most of the furniture and portions of Elle’s body, but these ones don’t move as they please and are as harmless as a puppy. If it weren’t night, Irial might even fall asleep on the couch next to her, but sleep is still far away from him. Instead, he shakes his head and walks to her, plopping down by her side. With his head sinking in the cushions, he turns to look at her, mischief always pulling at his lips even here, in a place he has been used to rest for a long time. “Here I am. Now what?” 

     Even if he’s going to be slapped because of his stupid joke, he already knows she’ll smile at him.

     HE STOMPED into the umpteenth pool of sticky ink, but he shot nothing more than an annoyed glance at his stained shoes. Their original color had been completely buried under layers and layers of shiny black, just like more than half his trousers. He was used to it by now. He had never been one to whine about dirty clothes, thus he shook his annoyance off his shoulders and kept walking down the corridor with Elle by his side. Silence was overwhelming. Ink flowed in the pipes above their heads and the floor creaked beneath their feet, but that was all. No signs of other living beings, be them made of flesh or of ink. He liked silence, but this one unnerved him. It brought uneasiness. It summoned it. 

     (are those around his fingers rivers of ink or his own shadows?)

     “I don’t like this place.” Words that rarely left his mouth. He turned to Elle, a smudge of ink staining his right cheek, starting from the corner of his mouth. “Which valve are we looking for again?”

THE WAR THAT SAVED MY LIFE || not accepting.

     FOR SOMEONE as restless as she was, listening to Elle’s advice was hard. Even when lightly injured (a superficial wound, nothing worrying, yet something she better keep away from Mother’s and her guardian’s gazes), she kept performing everyday tasks as if nothing had happened. Always so stubborn. She would have dragged herself through the snow with the world on her back, had she had to.

     Elle caught her while she was resting and gathering enough strength to get up and go on with her day. Before Chris could move, though, the other woman’s hand was on her shoulder to gently push her back into a sitting position. Chris looked up at her, puzzled first, then resigned. Elle would not accept disobedience, not even for something as trivial as this. She exhaled, then smiled. “I will try. I can’t promise you I’ll rest for too long, though,” she replied, her words followed by that soft chuckle always so typical of hers.

     THE HALLWAY was empty, yet his footsteps were barely audible. He walked towards the door in utter silence, as if he was not there, as if he was nothing but an apparition with void eyes and a beautiful and terrifying aura. His hand brushed against the wall to help him find his bearings. His sense of direction, although belonging to a blind creature, was well-developed, nonetheless he needed a little help from time to time, especially in places he was not too familiar with. This was one of those cases. He knew well the girl waiting for him, but those walls were quite foreign to him. He did not doubt, though, he would have many chances to know them better.

     A few more steps, then his hand passed from the wall to the door. He pushed it and stepped inside, greeted by faint noises whose exact source he could not recognize. “May I—come in?” As if the wolf had not already entered the room.
