Photographer and journalist Ellen Thorbecke (born Ellen Kolban, 1902-1973)

Ellen Thorbecke, born Ellen Kolban, intermittently Ellen Catleen (26. May 1902 in German Wilmersdorf, German Empire - 11. Sept 1973 in The Hague, Netherlands) was a Dutch newspaper reporter, writer and photographer. During her stay in the Republic of China, she made a unique photo series of portraits and street scenes in the Chinese countryside and the cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong to illustrate her newspaper articles. The photos were published in books, for which she also wrote the texts. With her modern reports on China, Ellen Thorbecke occupies a unique place in the genre of derethnographic photography.
