Mistletoe Kisses

Everyone knew Dan and Phil were festive, for men in their twenties. They loved all the holidays, but especially Christmas.
Christmas was their absolute favourite time of year, all the decorations, the presents, getting to see family. It was a very cheerful time and Phil was a cheerful person. Dan just followed his friend, happy to be included.
For Dan, as happy as Christmas was, it was also a lonely time. There were plenty of mistletoes, plenty of happy couples, but he was always single.
There was only really one reason why, and Dan was reluctant to admit it. He never really tried to look for anyone, but there was someone always on his mind when Christmas rolled around. Phil.
Sweet, caring, lovely Phil, with his adorable smile, his even more adorable laugh. Dan had been in love ever since they met, which wasn’t good for him.
See, Dan had never thought himself good enough to date someone like Phil, someone so perfect, when he clearly was not. He had too many flaws, and he felt so vulnerable around Phil. They shared everything, which of course would mean that his friend knew all of his insecuities, and all his fears, just like Dan knew his.
He just knew that Phil couldn’t love him with all his issues.
So, he put up with it. He put up with not having anyone to share Christmas with, put up with feeling so lonely in the holiday season, put up with not being able to hold Phil’s had, or kiss him, or any of the other nice things couples did.
No, he wouldn’t complain, he’d take it on the chin, even when Phil brought many boys and girls home during the season, none lasting long.
Dan imagined what it would be like to be just one of those people, who got limited time with Phil. His friend was a bit of a heart breaker, and he was just lucky it wasn’t all over the internet. He’d have a bunch of partners over the year, but when Christmas came around, it felt like there was someone new everyday.
Until Phil brought home Blake.
Blake was a fairly attractive guy, around Dan’s age, slightly tanned, gorgeous brown eyes, and hair to match. Each strand seemed like a new curl, his hair was so messy, but it seemed to suit him. It was almost… Stylish.
He was fit, and taller than Phil, almost Dan’s height, really, but he wasn’t buff. He looked like he just burned all the fat away by smiling. And that smile! He had dimples much larger than Dan’s, and they suited him much better.
Their style was even the same. Dan had had the misfortune of meeting him before the Christmas season, and he would normally wear lot’s of black like Dan, but Christmas sweaters as soon as it became December.
It was Christmas Eve, by that point, Phil should have gone through at least ten other people, but no. Blake had stayed almost all December, and it was bugging Dan. What did Blake have that Dan didn’t?
Nothing, it seemed. They had so much in common, it was almost unfair that Phil was dating him. He would have liked to be friends.
But that wouldn’t happen. He couldn’t be friends with someone who was dating Phil, even if he hadn’t seen them do anything.
Blake was a nice guy, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t competition.
Well, there probably was no competition, he would have already won. No one had gotten Phil to date them for as long as Blake had.
Dan was oth annoyed and impressed by that fact.
"Hey Phil." Dan greeted sleepily on the morning of Christmas Eve. He’d just come into the kitchen to grab some coffee, and saw that Phil was in a particularly good mood, humming and dancing around as he made his breakfast.
"Happy Christmas Eve, Dan!" The older boy sang, a huge grin on his face that made it impossible for Dan not to smile.
"Where’s Blake? He’s normally here in the mornings." Dan said casually, secretly hoping that Phil had come to his senses and dumped him.
"Oh." Phil mumbled, his mood dropping instantly. "He had to go home for Christmas. His mum got sick."
"Is she okay?" Dan asked, frowning at Phil. So they were still together, and Phil was sad Blake was gone?
"Oh yeah, but he’s too nice to leave her by herself. She’s a bit… Unstable, as he put it."
"What does that mean?"
"Don’t know."
"Hope she gets better, then."
"Me too. Anyways, I’m gonna go give him a call. Enjoy your coffee."
Their brief conversation ended, and Dan’s mood dropped once again.
The day passed slowly, Dan working up the nerve to talk to Phil by distracting himself all day. Then, he had an idea. It was stupid, incredibly stupid, and could go horribly wrong, but he had to try. He had to do it while Blake wasn’t there to fill him with guilt.
It was also corny, he knew it was just some soppy tradition, but it was kind of endearing. He went looking through all the old Christmas decorations, and eventually found what he was looking for; a mistletoe.
He put it up in the hallway and fixed his hair, even put on some lip balm to make himself look more kissable.
Phil could completely reject him, it was scary.
"Hey, Phil! Can you come here a second?" Dan yelled, biting his lip. It was out of sight, something you wouldn’t notice unless you were actually looking, and Phil wouldn’t be looking.
"What do you want?" Phil called, stepping out of his room.
"Come here." Dan said, rolling his eyes. His heart was racing a mile a minute, but he tried to act calm.
"Why…?" Phil replied, taking slow steps towards him, obviously expecting something like a prank, and in some ways, it was.
"Just come!" Dan chuckled, waiting until Phil was standing a few steps in front of him. Now they were both under the mistletoe. "Now look up."
It took a few minutes of coaxing to get Phil to do it, he still thought it was a prank, but when his eyes landed on the fake plant, a blsh instantly started to spread across his cheeks. “Mistletoe…” He whispered.
Dan had to hold back a coo, Phil was so cute. He grabbed his friend’s hands gently and gave him a shy smile. “I guess this means we have to kiss now, huh?” He asked quietly, stepping into Phil’s personal space and leaning down until their noses brushed.
They were both lushing, and Phil had this unreadable look in his eyes as he whispered a small “Yeah…” before leaning up just a bit until their lips pressed together, in a very soft, very sweet kiss.
Dan felt butterflies explode in his stomach as a grin spread wide on his face. He pulled away after a few seconds, stroking the back of Phil’s hands. “Merry Christmas, Phil…”
Later, he was lucky enough to be curled in Phil’s lap, a comforting hand stroking his waist. He felt so happy. So, fucking happy, to finally be with the person he loved.
"So how long… How long have you… You know?" Phil eventually asked, breaking the silence and kissing along Dan’s neck, as it was the only bare part of him the older man could reach, since Dan was wearing a sweater.
"Ever since I met you." Dan mumbled back, blushing. But Phil didn’t tease him, in fact, he seemed happy.
"Same." The boy mumbled, kissing Dan’s cheek and making him blush even more. Happy, happy, happy. He was so happy, he couldn’t stop grinning.
"But what about Blake? What about all those other people you dated?" Dan asked, turning around in Phil’s lap to pout at him.
"Didn’t you ever notice? The ones I had the longest relationships with were the most like you. You and Blake were almost like twins, that’s why he’s lasted the longest. Everyone else… I’m lonely, Dan. I just wanted to get my mind off you."
Dan’s insides twisted pleasantly and he leant forward to kiss him again.
"I don’t think he really likes me, anyway. He always seemed more interested with getting with his doppelganger. Self absorbed much?" Phil chuckled.
"Really? Maybe we could have a threeway then." Dan teased, turning back around in Phil’s arms and sighing contentedly.
"Somehow, I think you’d be the centre of attention for that."
"I wouldn’t mind being the centre of attention for you."
"So romantic."
"I know, right? Merry Christmas. You get a boyfriend as a present."
"Boyfriend?"
"…Yeah."
"I love you."
"I love you, too, you soppy twit."
