I always thought Back to the Future 2 could’ve used a different song in the Cafe 80s scene, a song that had come out in the years since part 1, to give it a more accurate “future pov,” but I’ve only recently come to understand that “Beat It” is perfect, not only in vibes, but also thematically. It’s part of Marty’s character arc. The whole rest of the movie, he keeps running into confrontations when he should’ve beat it. That’s the lesson he’s supposed to learn. The song choice is perfect.
