i am a bi max truther, and i do believe she had a crush on lucas. later, she met jane (and developed feelings for her.) we know that neil called billy homophobic slurs, so who's to say that he didn't call max things like that as well? and she could have internalized it, leading to internalized homophobia. now, in s4, what if vecna targeted max (partly) for her internalized homophobia? putting her in the snowball setting with jane, paralleling her at the snowball with lucas, would've been a cruel reminder of the part of herself she feels so ashamed of. maybe she wanted to dance at a snowball or other school dance with jane, so this was vecna "fulfilling" her wish, but in a twisted way, making her feel more dirty.
