OTRO CAFE
by El Moisés
Phoenix chef Doug Robson was born in Mexico to parents of French Vietnamese and Scottish English descent so you know his Mexican cuisine is going to be interesting and his first restaurant Gallo Blanco ("White Guy") garnered wide acclaim. When he opened his "Other" restaurant a few years later in 2013—"Otro" on 7th Street near Bethany Home—it quickly collected the Phoenix New Times award for Best New Mexican Restaurant. Navigating the lane between Otro and the Healthy Habit store next door cafe guests and shoppers are welcomed by this flame breathing driver headed to the back lot. (Painted in August it's probably a close call as to whether those peppers or the Phoenix sun were hotter.) Moisés, a Phoenix native now living in Albuquerque, NM says his work brings barrio flavor to modern mainstream art and reflects his roots in Chicano, American, Native American, and Mexican cultures. @artistelmoises @otrocafephx
