I waited for about 15 minutes crouching in a dark, backstage corner, for Leon Russell to come in the back door of Antone's. My knees were on fire; but I wasn't leaving my post. To my good fortune, he came in and immediately sat down on the stairs, just through the door directly in front of me. His road crew guys were still outside holding the door open. The light from the alley poured over him and bathed his white hat, jacket and beard in a sacred glowing light. I snapped my first frame on the roll and looked down to check my exposure settings. I couldn't believe my luck. When I raised back up, no more than 3 seconds later, the alley door had shut, all was dark and someone took place directly in front of me. Luck was moving quickly that night. I didn't get a second shot at the moment. It was either on the frame, or it was always gonna be one of those private visions, not captured but never forgotten. I wiped the sweat from my brow, smiled and quietly thought to myself, if that one comes back, it'll be the defining moment for my SXSW this year... Well, this is it. This is what it was all for. I don't need it to mean anything more than this. I've waited a very long time for this one. ...............................
