So what happened in North Dakota that made Dennis come back to Philly? Well recent events have me thinking and I propose this explanation:

Season 13 premiers in September of 2018 and that gives us a fairly good example of the timeline. What else happened in 2018? In May of that year Grimes and Elon Musk start dating after making AI jokes on Twitter and arriving at the Met Gala together. 

Dennis, clearly distraught over seeing his ex with a younger indie celebrity, goes on a downward spiral. There was a little bit a hope when the two unfollowed each other on Twitter, but after it became apparent that the two were serious, Dennis broke down and came back home to Philadelphia.

dennis reynolds was born in 1976 and therefore likely would have graduated from the university of pennsylvania in 1998. stay with me here but elon musk graduated from upenn in 1997 which means they overlapped by 3 years. my point here is that it is a possibility, though a slim one, that in canon dennis reynolds could have sucked elon musk’s dick in college. thank you for your time i do not take constructive criticism
