COLOURS OF THE NIGHT

It is finally done! I have lost SO MUCH sleep trying to finish it in time for the convention, but it all worked out in the end :’)

(And a big, heartfelt "thank you" to my friend @amoaliquis who kindly lit the proverbial fire under my arse when I most needed it.  You truly are THE best, I hope you know that <3)

So because I spent a considerable amount of time on this piece (mainly due to skill issues lol), might as well elaborate a bit on some of the symbols I decided to use in this artwork. You can find these ramblings under the cut if you're interested ;)

"YOU CAN FORGET JUST HOW MUCH COLOUR THERE IS IN THE WORLD" :

One of my favourite Astarion lines. It simultaneously acknowledges the tragedy and grimness of a given situation, past or present, as well as the powerful amazement of remembering that despite everything, there are still beautiful things to fight for. I feel like these words can resonate in a meaningful way in any context where strenght and hope are needed, and that's why I chose them as a starting inspiration for this piece.

BLOODROOT :

I recently read this beautiful post by @cunthulhu-xo about how the flower placed on Astarion’s grave in act 3 looks like bloodroot and why it ties so well thematically with vampirism. Please go read it as they were far more eloquent on the subject than I could ever be, but needless to say their headcanon easily found its way into my heart and into my mind. (Interestingly, I would like to add that in French, that flower is called “sanguinaire”, which literally translates to “bloodthirsty”!)

MOONFLOWERS :

These magnificent and somewhat mystical flowers are in the same family as Morning Glories, but the wonderful thing about them is that they only bloom during the night, so you need to "walk in the shadows" in order to witness such a precious floral spectacle. Therefore, they are to me the perfect symbol of Astarion finding peace in remaining a vampire spawn after freeing himself from Cazador, because they represent all the beauty, inner peace, and even joy he couldn't have had if he had taken a different path.

MINERAL MOON :

It is the name given to a type of Moon photo where the colours of the existing minerals on its surface are digitally enhanced to a point where it looks like a glorious pastel rainbow has been painted all across! This is of course not visible to the naked eye, but these colours are indeed real and a well kept wonder of the night sky. Symbolically echoing what the aforementioned moonflowers represent, it allowed me to explore the same concept with added visual weight. (And I'll be completely honest here, this was also a fun excuse to insert another nerdy interest of mine into my art...!)

STARRY SKY :

This one is for my beloved OC Elore, as this refers to the name she calls him when they start defining their relationship. She was trained as a ranger in her youth and as such, she used to orient herself at night with the stars. That was before she fled from her homeforest and to Baldur’s Gate, for reasons I won’t get into in this already long post (...)! Calling him “My Starry Sky” is her way of letting him know that although the darkness was and still is an important part of his story, his presence into her life has also brought so much light that she was finally able to “find her way home” again, after what seemed like a decades-long night.

Chloris and Solas

The Inquisitor is trying to convince a certain Fade Expert to join her at the Herald's Rest during a particularly lively night. Will she succeed?

I imagined this scene happening once their relationship had been somewhat established, while still being fairly new... so sometime shortly after the balcony kiss, when Chloris feels less shy about voicing when she wants to spend time with Solas.

A few things I'd like to point out :

Of course Skyhold has shitty Wi-Fi

Chloris uses the iambic pentameter to describe the scene at the tavern. She doesn't realise she's doing it, but Solas picks up on it ;)

"OMC" stands for Oh My Creators. Obviously.

Elore and Astarion

This was interesting to think about, because communication especially is a major challenge for this (very) unlikely pair. Unlike Astarion, words aren't really Elore's forte. And while she appears all relaxed and cool most of the time, poor baby has a pretty harsh inner monologue, so she needs to hear some good ol’ words of affirmation once in a while…

I am certain that Elore would be terrible with a phone, so I knew their conversation had to start with her texting into the void. She would also need to make typos, and not use proper punctuation simply because she has a hard time figuring out the keyboard layout. 😅

[Oh no! What is this strange and uncomfortable feeling? I am fairly acquainted with the vulnerable sensation of sharing art by now, but there’s a whole new type of discomfort I'm experiencing for writing! Wow I don’t like it at all! Quick, make it go away by shifting the focus to other people!]

It’s already cheesy enough that we bought this (very expensive) sculpture because you thought it would make your bf happy to finally be able to see his own features after nearly 200 years. Look I get it though, it was a sweet gesture…

But let's also not pretend that carrying it up the stairs at the Elfsong in front of a bewildered crowd wasn't at least a little bit awkward. Oh I know what you were thinking...
