Falling Slowly (The Arranged Marriage AU) - Chapter 7
Happy Elsarik Week! And Happy Anniversary Elsa and Alarik! Alarik belongs to @patricia-von-arundel
Rated M
Chapter 7
“I loved you first,” he murmured against her lips
The First Meeting
Modern AU. Alarik and Agnarr meet face-to-face for the first time. Prompt: Every Inch of Me Is Trembling.
A/N: This is in no way inspired by the first time my husband met my father. This is for @couragedontdesertme who said she wanted a piece where Agnarr and Alarik meet (I think? My memory isn’t what it used to be . . .). Many thanks to @frozenprocedural and @ravenclaw-geek394 for hosting Elsarik Week. And, of course, @patricia-von-arundel for coming up with such a great character whom I’m about to butcher. Not literally. I feel it’s important I clarify.
And I forgot to thank @fericita-s who is so kind and patient in beta reading every word I put before her and making my stories so much better. Even for the pairs she doesn’t follow. YOU ARE AWESOME!
* * * * *
Alarik drummed his fingers against the table top until Elsa’s increasingly pointed stare got him to still his hand. She gave him a faint smile and turned her attention back to the garage door, hands folded in her lap. He fidgeted with his watch. He could hear her father’s voice from the garage. Had been listening for the last fifteen minutes as Dr. Runardsund had carried on a muted conversation since arriving home. But try as he might, he couldn’t make out the words.
It was his first time formally being introduced to Elsa’s father. He knew of him, of course, from the University. Dr. Runardsund was one of the most prominent medical historians in the country and had recently written a book that found cross-over mainstream success, examining the surgical methods used by indigenous peoples around the world. Alarik, though his interests lay more in epigenetics, had attended one of his public lectures only to meet the esteemed historian’s eldest daughter. That had been almost a year ago. It had taken several months to screw up the courage to ask her out for a more-than-friends coffee. He rubbed the back of his neck.
Elsa noticed and smiled at him. “Don’t be nervous.”
“I’m not,” he lied, disliking their shift in dynamic. Usually he kept her calm and centered. “But he’s, you know, academic royalty and I’m a post-doc.”
“Dad is pretty low-key,” she reassured him. “If you could survive Anna, you’ll survive him.” He shrugged noncommittally. Anna loved everyone. And enthusiastically at that. And Anna’s husband, Kristoff, was happy enough to trust anyone whom Elsa trusted which, given the man’s massive size, was a relief. He squirmed again in his seat, wishing he didn’t feel like a teenager picking up his date. Maybe that was the problem. There hadn’t been anyone serious before Elsa. This was his first time Meeting The Parents. Except her mother wouldn’t arrive until dinner. And he was twenty-eight. Twenty-eight and starting to sweat through his shirt.
“Alarik, he’ll love you,” she smiled shyly. “I do.”
He beamed at her as she rose from her seat.
“I’m going to the bathroom. I’ll be right back.” She walked off, the floorboards of the old house creaking under her step. As soon as he heard the bathroom door click shut, the garage door flew open. Alarik shot up to his feet as Dr. Runardsund strode into the kitchen, leather satchel in one hand, umbrella in the other and being wielded uncannily like a sword. Although Alarik matched the man for height, he still felt small under his gaze.
“Um,” he licked his lips. “I’m Alarik.”
There was a long moment of silence as Dr. Runardsund looked him up and down, from the top of his tousled hair, to his university sweatshirt, to his cargo pants, to his scruffy sneakers. The man wore a long cut woolen coat over a vest and dress shirt, pressed khakis and spotlessly shined shoes that gleamed. He sported a neatly trimmed mustache in contrast to Alarik’s two days of the-lab-has-been-really-busy stubble. Elsa’s father tilted his head.
“Well, I certainly hope you are given that you’re standing in my house.”
The evening did not get easier from there.
Quality Time
Okay, this one, I’ve been looking forward to writing...
“Just. Stay. Still!”
“But it hurts! Ow, stop, you’re pulling!”
A familiar refrain, certainly. Daily. Every morning.
Alarik put his book down, considering how a new thought might be received. Favorably, or was it one of those things which he was not supposed to offer to do?
Well, he had never been fond of not having definitive answers.
They both looked up as he knocked on the open door: Elsa with a brush and ribbon, Jenny leaning away from her, her hair half-braided down her back, her cheeks red with fury.
“Tell her to stop, Papa.”
“Johanna Maria!”
“Don’t call me that!”
“Actually,” Alarik said, “that was exactly what I was hoping to tell her to do.”
Elsa cocked an eyebrow. “What?” Warning in her voice.
Time to make himself very clear, then: “Could you show me how to do it?”
“To... to braid Jenny’s hair?”
“That was what I was thinking, yes.”
“I...” Elsa looked down at the brush, then back to him. “I... suppose I could.”
“Wonderful, Darling. Thank you.” He offered Jenny a smile. “Is it all right with you, Eldig?”
“I guess. Don’t pull. Mama pulls.”
“You need to sit still. It wouldn’t pull if you were still.”
“Yes, it would. You always pull.”
Alarik went closer, before they returned to yelling. “So how do we do this, then?”
“Here.” Elsa handed him the comb, and showed him how to fold the tails of hair, one over the other.
“Quite simple, then.”
“You’d think.”
A few days later...
Elsa woke early, stretched. It came as no surprise to find the space on the bed next to her empty - Alarik sometimes seemed hardly to sleep at all.
What was a surprise was hearing his voice nearby. She got up and padded from the room, yawning but curious. His voice was coming from Jenny’s room.
Jenny’s room?
“...And so I find myself theorizing that it is perhaps some form of actual physical change, not merely a chemical one, though of course any chemical change also encompasses a physical component. The difference here is that I feel the mechanics of the physical change are not merely chemical in nature, but reflective of some other stimulant, though I haven’t yet been able to determine just what that stimulant might be. And so as a result I’ve been trying to - Oh, good morning, Darling.”
Elsa, speechless, watched as he finished Jenny’s long braid, tying the ribbon into a neat little bow.
Jenny never moved a muscle.
Now who’s the one with magic? Elsa could only shake her head. There were some things that truly could never be explained.
Det Drage Gås ~ A Late Elsarik Day 1 Story
Alarik sat still and stared, hard, resolute, at his opponent before him. Neither of them had moved for several minutes, there was the occasionally blink; this wasn’t a staring contest, staring just happened to be involved. But Alarik wouldn’t be moved, and to be honest, he was afraid to move. His opponent had never let him this close before, and not done something to push him away.
“What on this good Earth are you doing, dear?”
Startled at the sudden voice, Alarik jumped and even yelped, only to cringe. His opponent...a grey-white goose with a blue-tinted beak, flapped his wings as he honked in a way that sounded too close to laughter. The feathery beast trotted away, and though a part of Alarik knew better, he could swear it smugly, triumphantly marched. Alarik sighed, and turned around to look up at the one who interrupted the duel.
Elsa had an eyebrow raised, her head tilted just a little to one side, and a smirk that bordered on ornery on her lips.
Alarik tried his hardest not to pout, but one corner of his mouth did rebel just a tad. “I was...um, nothing, darling, I was doing nothing.”
The blonde’s expression remained mostly the same, but her eyelids did hang a little lower. “You two were dueling again, weren’t you?”
Alarik now let himself pout as he crossed his arms and sank into his chair. “Perhaps...”
Elsa shook her head as she chuckled, then walked to stand behind him as she rest her hands on his shoulders. “Don’t force respect with him, Alarik. Birger will like you in due time, I promise.”
She paused for a moment, then Alarik heard her giggle. “You’re both geese, after all, and birds of a feather flock together, do they not?”
Alarik leaned his head back to send her a playful glare, to which Elsa laughed out loud as she leaned on his shoulders. He waited a beat, then stood from his chair and went around to hug Elsa tightly. Despite the laughter that still wracked her form, the blonde hugged back just as if not more fiercely, and Alarik smiled.
Only to lose it as he looked over Elsa’s back to see him stare at them.
... blodig drage gås...
Elsarik Week Day 6-Devotion
I GOT IT UP IN TIME. I PROMISED I WOULD.
Rated E under the cut. Definite enthusiastic marriage times. But good fluff too.
Alarik belongs to @patricia-von-arundel.
Devotion
It was late when Alarik woke, dawn already well gone. His initial reluctance turned to joy when he realized there was no reason to leave the bed.
The last of the dignitaries had finally left the night previous, the remnants of a week-long trade summit that had Elsa waking early and bedding late each day. And that was on top of being a mother to an active three-year-old daughter. He'd helped where he was able, but save for making sure his wife ate enough, keeping Jenny distracted and occasionally carrying Elsa to bed- after finding her asleep in her study- there was little Alarik could do to lift the burden from Elsa's shoulders.
Little, save for strategic planning with Anna to ensure this morning would remain uninterrupted.
Elsarik Week, Day 7-Love
I had actually been working on this one a while back, and realized it would be perfect for today. So here it is- the aftermath of Frozen 2 if Alarik/Shardsverse had happened before the move.
Alarik, as always, belongs to @patricia-von-arundel
Love
It takes him far too long to realize something's wrong with Elsa.
Alarik knows he's dealt with a great deal- maybe too much- over the past few days. He's physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted. No one would blame him for missing the signs, especially when Elsa kept hiding them.
He does blame himself. He's better than that- he's had time enough to learn the subtle shifts in her behavior, well enough to know when she's the slightest bit uncomfortable. Let alone when she's in a great deal of pain.
But it takes until that evening, when he goes to check on her, that he finds out.
He knocks on the pole of the temporary shelter the Northuldra had built, and peers in. "Els…"
Her name catches in his throat.
