I'm betting it stands for Disc Jockey. Or rather it doesn't stand for anything: it's just DJ. I can totally imagine someone going to register their child's existence, still a bit woozy and giddy after the birth, when that irritating Madonna song comes on the radio: "Hey Mr DJ put a record on, I want to dance with my baby" and thinking "*That* is the *best* idea *EVER*!"

Given Hitomi’s kind of a crunchy hippie and Rumiko was experiencing some serious family rebellion, I bet she didn’t name him at all. I bet they planned to let him pick his own name, like Picabo Street’s parents did. 

So DJ might actually stand for Dory Jabberwocky because DJ picked his own name when he was like three. Dory Jabberwocky is a solid name if you’re a three-year-old.

I might be late? But tell me abt Maida's coworkers and how she feels about the birds at sanctuary and stuff plsplspls?

She originally wanted to work with raptors because ~falcons~ and ~majestic eagles~ and it all sounded so great in fantasy novels and what she really wanted was a special bird that would understand her and be her friend.

Then she learned that birds are weird stubborn little shits that bite to show love. She also made actual friends, largely by showing up to clean cages and being an awkward precocious teenager at everyone in the vicinity, and slowly learning that literally nothing she could do or say about her experiences or interests would be too weird for them. It helped that the conservatory word kind of networked for her--if her family moved her to Albuquerque, a supervisor at her last volunteer gig would phone ahead to someone they knew at a rescue there and say, “We’ve got a kid moving out your way who’s into birds and a good worker, but her parents aren’t reliable; any chance you could arrange for someone to give her a ride over to spend some time with you on a regular basis?” And then when it was time to move again, the Albuquerque rescue phoned ahead to Modesto or wherever.

She was halfway through her BSc in Biology when her mental health got really bad and she dropped out, and she’s felt way too intimidated and undermotivated to ever go back to it.

These days she trains a lot of vultures and condors to do things like “let people feed you without attacking them” or “let the vet save your fucking life” or “get into a cage for fuck’s sake”. They’re ungrateful undomesticated bastards, not pretty, rarely majestic, but she likes them all the same.

She tries her best to be kind to any children who show up to help clean cages.

This reminded me: apparently there is, in Australia, an actual restaurant named Mjolner. Supposedly it sells Viking-themed food. I feel it must be a spiritual sibling to the Foodieverse's Mjolnir.

BUT DOES IT SERVE CRISPY CRAB THINGS. 

(The crispy crab things are, in reality, heavily based on a delicacy from a previous sushi joint of mine, which would take mini shrimp shumai and deep fry them.)

I wasn't aware DS fandom had room for wank outside of the Ray wars, which echoed all over fandom to the point I wouldn't have watched DS on a bet. Everything I know about DS, I learned from Ces.

I mean, I think the Ray Wars were merely a demonstration of the awesome power of wank that fandom possessed. It’s actually quite a credit to the fandom as a whole that it just had the One Big One and didn’t constantly have ongoing little ones like HP and LOTR did. 

I loved Due South and watched it when it aired, but at the same time it used to air at midnight in my region, so my memories of it are hallucinatory at best.
