Off the Rio Grande. The El Vado Motel is a historic auto court dating back to 1937. It closed in 2005 amidst plans to demolish and convert the site into luxury townhomes. After sitting vacant including a period where the iconic sign disappeared and worried Route 66 and sign fans alike, the El Vado gained a new lease on life and reopened as a fully renovated boutique hotel, event center, and tap room in July 2018. And yes the neon sign glows along Central Avenue yet again.
