I'm only 14, and I now owe the Burmese Government about $800SGD.
Every single citizen of Myanmar does.
Why is no one talking about this? That the government officials told the citizens outright that if they tried to complain, they would be slapped. That they should skip a meal a day to try to pay the government back. That they should try to live off around TWO FUCKING SGD to pay the government back. Any citizen that is born right now is in dept of 800 SGD. BABIES OWE THEM.
The broke, the homeless, the dying… They all owe the government 800SGD. Students are getting beaten up and jailed for protesting for their rights. The people are suffering. Sure 800 SGD isn’t much for me. My school fees are higher than that, but for the dying citizens, the poor citizens, the people already in dept… It is. Yet there’s no coverage on this whatsoever.
I don’t know why. Is it because it’s not close to the US enough? Not western enough? Not important enough? That a baby in Myanmar is born right now and already has a dept on them. That a homeless man in Myanmar right now owes the government more money than he could ever make. That ENTIRE FAMILIES are being told to live off 2SGD? That students, as young as 14, are being beaten down and thrown to jail for asking for better education?
Can we please talk about this?
