Memorial Space Service... Is this LoveDeath??

Elysium Space recently began a service to launch the remains of your loved ones into space - for the small fee of $1,900.

According to their website, "Elysium Space memorial spaceflights launch a symbolic portion of a departed's ashes into space," and their next launch is scheduled for summer 2014 in Cape Canveral, Florida. The "Memorial Spaceflight Service" has multiple components, including "the printing of initials on the capsule containing the remains," "an invitation to the launch viewing events," and "a professionally produced video of the launch event."

Remind you of anything?

For us at Seven Stories, this service is startlingly reminiscent of the LoveDeath service in Andri Magnason's LoveStar. In the novel, LoveDeath is a memorial service that sends bodies of the deceased into space in special suits, so that as they fall back through the atmosphere and burn up, they appear as shooting stars to their watching loved ones.

"LoveDeath made death cleaner, grander, more glamorous, and simpler. It saved on land area. There was no grave to neglect, no guilt about weeds, no headstone to buy later. No stench, no horror or grinning skulls. ...LoveDeath was ubiquitous. Maybe Magnason was onto something... Is spaceflight the future of memorial services??
