3. How do they calm one another down?

When Fenris is upset, Rowan knows to give him space. He will wait for Fenris to collect himself. If Fenris needs to be alone, Rowan will leave. Otherwise, he quietly waits nearby. Rowans presence is a comfort, and Fenris will give him a sign when he’s ready to talk.

Rowan is his opposite. When he’s upset, Fenris stays close by. Rowan is tactile, so lots of little touches help assure him. (He’s ready to hug his problems away.) A little kiss, a touch to the cheek, fingers stroking his hair. Rowan centers himself with those bits of affection.

9. Who said ‘I love you’ first?

Oh, Rowan did for sure. He didn’t expect Fenris to return the words, not right away. But he wanted to make sure the feelings were out in the open.

14. What was the most thoughtful gift they got for one another? How did one another react when receiving the gift?

Rowan got Fenris a fancy bound journal so he could practice his writing and also put down his thoughts and feelings. Fenris was touched because it was something thoughtful that was meant for just him. There was no expectation that he share the journal with Rowan. (Sometimes he lets Rowan read select parts of it, and Rowan considers those little gifts.)

Fenris learned to cook Rowan’s favorite meal (chicken dumplings) and made him dinner one night. Rowan might have started crying. (…okay, he did.)

15. What is an inside joke they have? How did it come about?

da asks. 62 and 63

62. A character you think deserves more fan love?I know it’s preaching to the choir here, but honestly I’m going to say Zevran. There’s a nice comfortable pocket of us here on Tumblr that love him, but the truth is, I think it’s cold out there in the real world. I know I’ve had to explain “no no no you don’t understand, his romance is amazing” multiple times to real-life people I’ve discussed the game with. And I’ve heard the response “oh, that guy? I killed him because he attacked me” more than once. (I die a little inside each time.) So yeah. Everybody else out there ( and yes, this includes you, Bioware). Please love Zevran.

63. Best story moment?Hm. This one is hard because I had to figure out how I want to interpret ‘best’. I’m going to go with the moment that felt like it was the most impactful. I think if a moment makes you feel enough to leave a mark, that makes it a good one.

So yeah...I’m going with the climax of All That Remains in DA2. There’s just this feeling of tension running through the whole mission - you know what’s happened to the all the other women before. So you’re hurrying, trying your hardest to track the kidnapper down and you hope that you’re not too late. And then...boom. It’s a total kick in the gut, and I had to stop playing for a little while after it ended. But it stuck with me.

5 OC Facts

I want to talk about my canon Hawke, Rowan. Here he is, looking antsy at the start of the DA2.

Back in Lothering, Rowan was in charge of the household finances and day-to-day upkeep. He originally helped his father around the farm with manual labor (he liked caring for the animals and excelled at chopping wood 💪). Malcolm eventually realized that Rowan had a good head for numbers and involved him more in the business aspect of things. After Malcolm died, Rowan was the one who picked up the slack. He kept the family afloat and made sure they never went hungry.

Rowan has a natural affinity for healing and Creation magic, but relies on Arcane and Force in battle. He has considered forming a contract to become a full-fledged spirit healer, but decided against it. He isn’t scared of the idea of it, but instead is reluctant to fully take on a support-oriented role because he knows his fighting skills are necessary. Rowan hopes that some day he can be done fighting. Maybe then he’ll reconsider, and be able to better devote himself to healing. Until then, he’ll stick to the basics and help however he can.

Rowan is not very religious. He went to the Chantry when it was expected of him, but otherwise tends to avoid it. Part of it comes from his deep-rooted fear of Templars and his desire to steer clear of them. Another part is from his skepticism regarding the Maker and the Chantry’s very teachings. However, he doesn’t broadcast his stance, and doesn’t mind discussions of Andrastianism and other forms of belief.

Rowan is fan of writing letters. He loves corresponding with people, and enjoys expressing himself in the written word. (He was happy to help Fenris learn to read and took to leaving written notes around for Fenris to find.) Rowan sometimes writes letters that he never sends. He has a box in his room full of letters to people he lost (his family, friends who didn’t make it) There are also letters to Fenris that he couldn’t bring himself to deliver while they were apart.

Rowan gains weight easily. He was heavyset growing up, but added muscle from the farm work. Rowan was solid when he first came to Kirkwall, but lost a lot of weight during the Lowtown years. He ended up gaining it back after moving to Hightown. He’s still got the muscles, but there’s some padding to go with it. Rowan doesn’t really mind.

Extra 'meta’ fact from me: When I write FenHawke fics, they usually aren’t about Rowan and Fenris. I’ve done this weird compartmentalizing thing where Rowan happily exists in my personal canon, and Garrett Hawke ends up in my fics. Out of all of the DA protags, I think Garrett/Marian are the ones who end up having sort of...fandom-accepted personalities? I know I’m guilty of defaulting to Garrett as a bearded ‘purple’ mage. Maybe some day I’ll try writing just about Rowan. It’ll be interesting to see how they bleed into one another.
