There's leftover coffee on the pot he left the previous evening. He heats it up in the microwave and checks the time. 2 pm. Early compared to the weeks prior. The rest of his apartment is covered in glass windows that illuminate and warm his space. Vernon sits on the balcony, letting the sun-rays soothe the goosebumps on his skin created by the wind.
High up in the air, with the sun on his face and the hot drink between his hands, he almost feels better. He could take a walk outside, go to a park or go see a movie. If he wasn't who he is, someone so recognizable to many people in the city, he'd do all of those things.
Vernon sighs. There used to be times, way before Seungkwan approached him outside his family's record store and asked him to come rehearse with his band, that he loved sitting in the park for hours writing whatever came to mind down on his journal. Or times when he'd spend his month's salary watching movie after movie in his town's theater. Back then, he wasn't satisfied with that life either, he was always searching for more, sending his writing to countless agencies and getting no response. That person would've never imagined he'd reach all of his dreams and then they'd come crashing down on him.
Now, he can't go outside without getting recognized, he can't string more than two words together to form a verse, his bass remains on the trunk of his car, untouched for weeks. The things that got him where he wanted, now gone.
The line phone ringing takes Vernon out of his thoughts. God, why did he even have that installed in the first place? It rang once a day without fault, and it was always either a scam or someone trying to get him to upgrade some subscription he wasn't even sure he had.
"What?" He groans against the plastic phone.
"Hansol?" The elderly voice asks on the other side. "Finally, I've been trying to reach you all morning!"
"Mom?" He replies, embarrassed.
"Why weren't you answering? Did you change your number again? Did something else happen?"
"No, no, nothing happened." He shrinks against the wall. "I was asleep, I'm sorry."
There's silence on the line while both of them think what to say. Hearing his mom's voice affects him like nothing else. Admittedly, he hasn't been the most communicative son lately. He doesn't want to tell his family what happened between the band. No one in the world knows it, but his mom always asks the right questions, and even without seeing him face to face, Vernon's sure she'll see right through him.
"I'm not calling to check in, sweetie."
It takes Vernon by surprise, the way his mom sighs the words out. "Is everything okay?"
"Well," she starts, unsure. "You know you're father and me never wanted to take advantage of you."
"Mom, I keep telling you, if you need money to cover rent, just ask me. I always want to help, you just won't let me."
"I know, I know." He can picture the way she must be shaking her head and waving her hand in dismissal. "It's about the shop."
"I can pay the shop's rent or whatever you guys—"
"It's not that, Hansolie, we just—one of our guys quit, and we've been having trouble finding someone who can manage to categorize everything properly." She takes a thinking breath. "Remember how you used to fix everything the customers left disorganized when you were little? You had so much fun… and your father and I though, now that the band's taking some time, that you wouldn't mind coming to help train someone."
Going home. He realizes then what his mother's doing. She's aware of his job situation, aware he won't answer her questions if she asked any, so, she slips in another option. In her way, a solution.
"Mom…"
There's a ruffling sound on her side of the line. Judging by the time and the hurriedness of her voice, she must be at the shop.
"I know, I know, but we miss you Sol. We want you to be okay."
"How do you know I'm not?" He asks in vain.
"Don't you want to come stay with us for a while? You haven't stopped by in a long time."
