Everything is broken and nothing works (but life is beautiful anyways)
I made this embroidered sampler for my mom for Christmas, based on a running joke we have about both my childhood home and our cottage, where most things are broken and some things don’t work (because said things are old/weather-afflicted/rickety/etc.).
I added the subtitle because, despite the occasional feeling that things are falling down around our ears (I love that expression), life is beautiful and there are so many things to be thankful for at both places (especially the cottage, a.k.a. our island paradise).
I initially worried that the whole sentiment of the piece might be a bit of a bummer, but by the end, once all the dainty foliage was done, it had turned into an unexpectedly hopeful thing in my head — a sort of sensible motto for the upcoming year that can be repeated as a means of comfort and inspire adventures in creative repair and finding joy in the little things.
Whew. That turned a bit sentimental, didn’t it?! Happy 2016, friends...this blog will be back to weird creatures & sci-fi biotech dystopias soon enough, I promise.
