I have to do homework but I was struck by an idea today of a soulmates tattoo or birthmark AU where Nathalie has a butterfly maybe black and white butterfly and Emilie has a white butterfly or maybe an inverted version of Nathalie's and anyway it doesn't matter that their marks are close bc Nathalie has been taught it doesn't matter it doesn't matter you aren't made for this and anyway soulmates doesn't mean happily ever after look at her father who married her mother for money and his real soulmate is a woman who flies in once a month for sex and cash and leaves but Nathalie is so so so close to being Emilie's soulmate but anyway it doesn't matter bc Emilie is with Gabi because his tattoo is a white butterfly or maybe a black butterfly and Nathalie is half of each of them but anyway it doesn't matter it doesn't matter it doesn't matter

It's been on my mind a lot lately that the name Emilie is so French. Like if she's supposed to be English gentry shouldn't she be Emily? Anyway that thought has bled into other thoughts of her meeting Nathalie in art school in France and Emilie as a dreamer and impulsive and I'm picturing her intentionally changing her signature to the ie because it helps her fit in more because she loves the idea of being French because Nathalie is an ie name as well and I'm wondering how she signed her marriage certificate with and ie or a y and does Nathalie think about her every time she writes that final stroke of her own signature did Emilie ever giggle about it and say look we match and did that mean more to Nathalie than she was ever going to let on does she feel like a part of her name is no longer wholly hers like there are no pieces of her that are not part of Emilie who spells her name differently on a whim because she does everything on a whim and so cannot fathom Nathalie's steadfastness but then again if she could she wouldn't be Emilie with an ie she'd just be Emily with a y and would Nathalie even love her the same way
