“A hot chocolate sounds delicious,” Wanda nodded in agreement as she took out the cigarette that was clenched between her teeth to take a long drag of it. The last time Wanda remembered having a hot chocolate was in February when it was still cold outside. She had one by herself, but now that she wasn't alone it would be more enjoyable with some company. "Do you want to come over to my apartment to have some? Or one from a café?"

Regardless of which one he chose, Wanda was just happy she was going to get to spend time with John. The moments they got to spend time together off duty, Wanda cherished it.

The silence that such an accusation receives is telling, guilty by omission. Plans were afoot, authorised by his command, that required neither elaboration nor permission from any known authority, barring his own, an approach borne of necessity rather than preference . He'd be the first to admit to finding it easier to apologise after the fact, even if it meant keeping others, especially heroes, in the dark about his intentions. Too much was at stake to risk delay.

"You have no idea." Voice elevated to carry the distance, the futuristic Spider peered up at his opposite without flinching, tone as blunt as rock. He'd seen his fair share of individuals gifted with some means to defy gravity's pull, but none that gave off quite a distinct glow, or wore such a uniform before. Due to a lack of familiarity, Miguel assumed a defensive posture, prepared for a fight, despite dangling from a building several stories up in the air.

Above everything else, he wasn't going to let a potential skirmish impede him from carrying out his task; tracking down the anomaly that remains at large in this world.

"If that bothers you, I get it." Not completely without heart, he throws the other man a rare lead, saying just enough in the hopes of being left alone. "But you need to let me pass, before it's too late."

+ It was absolutely the most KNOWING smile that Mary Jane could have possibly summoned that seized control of her lips . The BLUNT OBJECT she'd taken to using as an IMPROVISED bit of self-defense was clearly DENTED beyond repair . Considering the FIGURE that had been the TARGET of all her FIGHT-OR-FLIGHT response , perhaps they'd gotten off LUCKY just dealing with one ANGRY Mary Jane Watson . Her track-record certainly could SPEAK for itself , and then some .

she   wants   to   touch   him   ,   but   she   doesn't   know   if   that   would   make   things   better. 

john   was   out   for   . . .   a   while.   him's   illusions   can   make   years   happen   within   seconds.   john   experienced   a   lifetime.   buttercup   couldn't   see   it   ;   she   has   no   idea   what   happened   except   for   what   him   told   her   ,   and   she   has   no   reason   to   trust   them   except   for   the   glee   in   their   stupid   voice.   it   wasn't   even   a   fight.   they   weren't   even   in   battle.   him   just   wanted   to   torture   her   and   john   was   the   unfortunate   vehicle. 

unfortunate   in   the   aftermath.   in   the   waking   up.   in   opening   his   eyes   and   realizing   he's   lost   his   wife   a   third   time.   the   memory   of   children   that   didn't   exist   and   never   will.   of   the   life   he   should   be   living   ,   the   life   he   would   have   CHOSEN   instead   of   being   weasled   into.   how   do   you   make   that   better   ?   how   do   you   ease   the   transition   from   a   perfect   life   to   . . .   to   this   ?

she's   a   lousy   consolation   prize   and   they   all   know   it.   its   why   him   did   it.   it's   why   the   light   left   john's   eyes   as   soon   as   he   realized.   her   tongue   is   heavy   in   her   mouth   ,   unable   to   form   words.   her   muscles   are   tense   ,   hand   frozen   in   the   empty   air   between   them.   she   hadn't   even   realized   she   was   reaching   out   ,   desperate   for   connection   ,   for   something   to   tell   her   that   ,   at   least   physically   ,   john   is   okay. 

his   eyes   are   so   . . .   SAD.   confused. 

buttercup   wants   to   hold   him   but   how   fucked   up   is   that   , coming   face   to   face   with   your   wife's   subpar   replacement   after   a   lifetime   in   her   arms.   even   a   feigned   lifetime.   she   doesn't   know   what   to   do   ;   she   doesn't   know   what   to   say.   she   doesn't   even   know   what   she   wants.   for   john   NOT   to   have   experienced   that   happiness   ?   for   katma   to   be   alive   ?   for   them   never   to   have   met   ,   so   he   doesn't   have   to   go   through   this   ?   all   those   ideas   make   something   inside   her   crack. 

“   john   . . .   ?   ”   she   doesn't   mean   for   his   name   to   come   out   a   question   ,   but   it   does   ,   insecurity   creeping   through   her   voice   like   cracks   in   asphalt.

Atieno can't help the knowing and mildly amused look that they are giving John at the moment. They can tell that he had been trying to hide amusement and blatantly failing at that. Which only served to inspired a sly smile of their own - as if they weren't already contented enough by scaring off the politician so quickly.
