Bug of the Day
Found this thread-legged assassin bug (Emesaya brevipennis) on the screen of my porch last night. It’s so long a stringy-looking, it’s impossible to show how weird it is with just one photo. Check out the spikes on those forelegs!
#Emesaya #Brevipennis AKA Thread-Legged Bug the New World species of assassin #bug. Late night catch it was unexpected for me, #assassin #bug #macro #macrophotography #nature #nationalgeographic #TEXAS #austin #Pflugerville #planet #lonelyplanet https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn1cD1HhC67/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1c1bjjb5h7yyl
Okay, so I was trying to get a better look at this bug's face and I was looking and suddenly I realized that it kind of looks like it has an assassin bug's stabby mouth part. But it can't be, right? Assassin bugs have a completely different body shape. Maybe it's just a tiny stripe near it's mouth. But then why does it have those mantis spikes on it's arms? It wouldn't need that for eating leaves.
So I looked it up and yeah, there are long, skinny assassin bugs. I feel like I've been lied to. I hate assassin bugs. They're the only ones capable of hurting my baby mantises. I'll throw it on the ground somewhere in the morning.
