This was my third year photographing Essence Festival and this was, by far, the biggest involvement I have had to date. 

There’s a cool backstory to the inspiration for this shot that dates back to my first time photographing the festival in 2012. In short, I owe my uncle, JR Thomason, for the opportunities he has exposed me to and for challenging me to not look for the obvious shot.

I’ve been fortunate to have selfless, generous mentors that have asked nothing more than for me to be as great as possible. I thank The Most High for blessing me with them and it is my goal to steadily pay it forward.

BTW...Kendrick Lamar was awesome.
