Emile de Visscher, a friend of mine from the RCA, coats any materials using a technique called "pearling" to make them appear, well, more like pearls. His process is really smart, it involves mimicking oysters, dipping small objects successively in baths of polarised coating material.
He is currently exhibiting as part of the the "Alive: New Design Frontiers exhibition" at the Espace Fondation in Paris, which is full of interesting projects, worth checking out in itself.
