Emily Ewing-Wild West Midlands based singer-songwriter, Emily Ewing has been busy since the release of her debut self-titled EP, a few years back, there has been co-writes and recordings with the likes of Birmingham songwriter, Robert Lane, numerous session recordings and column inches for Lights Out Zine, but in recent months Emily has returned to the studio with producer, Dave Draper, in tow to record a brand new, three-track EP entitled Wild. The title-track leads proceedings and sees Ewing behind the piano, delivering a subtle yet affecting melody, but it's her luscious soulful tones that draw the listener in, slowly seducing, as the track unwinds and sees Emily self-harmonise, whilst Draper adds touches of instrumentation that bubble, rather than obstruct, further framing the gorgeous lead. Wild, is akin to stepping in for a hot soak after a long hard shift down the mine, it's a warm welcoming caress that washes over you, enticing you to submerge completely Ewing's soul kissed pop. Now Emily has your attention she invites drummer, Craig Blundell (current sticksman for prog rock legend Steve Wilson!!) in for a brilliant, slice of autumnal acoustic driven, rootsy pop, again, Ewing's beautiful lead is at the forefront of the mix, whilst a keen melody leads us towards a big, radio friendly hook, that once again features those aforementioned, winning harmonies and an infectious refrain that's hard to ignore. Whilst the EP's preceding songs mark out Emily Ewing's brand of pop as something special, it's the final number, Patience, that truly seals the deal. Based around a repetitive sparse piano motif, she delivers a heart wrenching slab of emotive modern day R&B, with a slight orchestral undertone and a suitable compliment of drums, the chilling instrumentation weaves an evocative spell whilst Ewing pleads for 'more than words' as her patience finally runs dry, during her stunning final lament, rendering Wild as absolute must have EP from a very talented artist. www.emilymusicworld.co.uk www.facebook.com/EmilyMusic89

Ginger Wildheart & Ryan Hamilton-Fuck You Brain

We all know someone who has suffered with mental health issues, anxiety and depression, in fact most of us at one time or another has gone through dark times and although recently there have been media campaigns and publicity around recognising and supporting mental health issues there's still so much to do. Christmas is one of the hardest times of the year for sufferers with depression, with charitable organisations such as the Samaritans inundated with phone calls and cries of help, reaching ever new highs over festive period. The volunteers at the Samaritans and other such organisations do an incredible job, a warm voice on the other end of the phone, the idea that there's someone out there who genuinely cares about a strangers well being and time spent with that person in crisis can be literally a matter of life and death. Of course the Samaritans works funded by the kindness of others and donations are always accepted with open arms, but is there more that we can do? Well musicians Ginger Wildheart and Ryan Hamilton, both no strangers to mental health and anxiety issues sat down and wrote a song documenting their own struggles, at first they didn't really have a plan for the song, Fuck You Brain, but an idea was hatched giving back to the Samaritans and helping raising awareness along the way, The duo took to the studio with producer Dave Draper, backing vocalists Givvi Flynn and Emily Ewing along with Matthew Colley on piano and pedal steel maestro Maurice Hipkiss to record the single and release it as part of a three track EP, with all proceeds being donated to the Samaritans. Ginger spoke of struggling even to get to the studio to record his parts of the song, as he continues to battle with his depression, but he also urged people to "please help us, in helping someone this year". Each of the participants speak of their own battles on the EP's release page and whether you like the track or not (and it's bloody hard not to) their words will resonate with one and all. Fuck You Brain is a sub three minute defiant rock 'n' roll romp, featuring buzzsaw riffs, rolling piano, waves of pedal steel, a driving punk like rhythm section (driven by Ginger himself on drums) and a glorious shout along vocal hook with Givvi and Emily adding to Ginger and Ryan's two fingers in the air salute, the track harks back to the Wildhearts best, Ginger and Ryan punching hard, whilst the aforementioned piano and pedal steel add a glorious backroom swagger to proceedings. Obviously the song's subject matter is very serious and personal to each of the performers, but together they've created a riotous, hard hitting and above all addictive ear worm full of bounce and bite. Emily Ewing is a Birmingham based singer-songwriter who to date, has already performed with 70's star Steve Gibbons and up and coming Shropshire act The Innocent whilst honing her craft around the various local music venues. Her blend of passionate piano led pop has also found favour with the likes of BBC WM after only a few months of performing solo. With the help of producer Dave Draper, Emily took to the studio to put down her debut five-track EP as something of an introduction to her songcraft and as opening gambits go, this is pretty damn flawless. From the opening number, Merry Go Round, Emily captivates with a wonderful breezy vocal, infectious keyboard melody and instantly contagious pop harmonies that wouldn't sound out of place at the top of the pop parade. Merry Go Round is a bold statement of intent, a big pop number that ticks all the necessary boxes yet Emily still manages to retain her own identity with her expressive voice shining brightly. As the EP continues Emily pulls at the heartstrings with her emotive and at times vulnerable voice oozing with passion on the likes of Know This and the beautiful ballad, Fairytale, whilst the layers of keyboards and strings further pepper an already mesmeric arrangement, drawing the listener deeper into Ewing's evocative vision of pop perfection. The disc concludes with another sweeping majestic pop masterpiece with Playhouse, strings and keyboards combine waltzing together effortlessly whilst Emily delivers yet another strong and heart wrenching vocal, showcasing a maturity and delivery that few performers can muster. Whether it's a big breezy hook-laden pop number such as Merry Go Round or an epic emotion fueled ballad, Emily seems to deliver with effortless ease and grace, impressive first release by a star in the making.
